Lyman is a friend of Jon Arbuckle and owner of Odie, he lived with Jon and Garfield for quite some time before being phased out of the Garfield comic strip. It was a common joke from Jim Davis that Lyman was in locked up in Jon’s basement (possibly dead), but it was confirmed (although never shown) that he joined the Peace Corps. In the TV show The Garfield Show, he was revealed to be looking for the a mythical creature and had become a photographer in the episode Long Lost Lyman. At this point he only appears in as a rare cameo in some Garfield related media.
