Jack Martin was a skilled combat pilot and had a relatively distinguished career. Until he retreated during a dogfight with the Luftwaffe. He saved his own life and that of his crew. But the three American planes left behind in the fight were all shot down, the crews killed. Martin was blamed for their deaths and branded a coward. With his reputation severely damaged, Martin found himself assigned to the Deadly Dozen.Â

He survived but was transferred out of the unit. He was one of the few members of the unit to survive the War.Â
