Magga the Magnificent

Origin

Kay is a news reader for the radio who secretly fights crime and / or evil by chanting “Om mani padme hum” and changing into Magga the Magnificent, who can fly and has, super strength.

Creators

In what is perhaps comic’s first instance of character gender bending we have Magga the Magnificent from Atoman #2 in 1946.

Atoman was from Sparks Publications, a line that lasted less than a year. Somehow or other they got hold of a Green Lama story but because GL was still owned by another publisher couldn’t publish it, or at least couldn’t until they turned Jethro Dumont the Green Lama into redheaded newswoman Kay who by chanting “Om mani padme hum” turned into the green clad super-powered Magga the Magnificent.

She only made one appearance in a story drawn by Mort Lawrence in the last issue of Atoman.
