As the ruler of the Pale City, it was the Makavi’s duty to keep its citizens afraid of colors. Because colors meant a certain death at the hands of giant lizards who are attracted to them. The lizards lived just outside the Pale City.
When a girl was born with colored eyes out of a secret affair between him and a normal woman named Tara, he dubbed her a monster. Naming her Kroma, he used her as an example for his citizens to teach them about why to fear colors.
After she escaped into the wilderness, Kroma learned to communicate with the lizards and used them to attack the Pale City. Confronted by Kroma, Makavi told her the truth about her parents and then, knowing his future ended with the Pale City, cut his own throat.
