Mandalla

Creation

The character known as Mandalla was created by DC Comics and first appeared in the published issue of Legion v.3 Annual #3 in 1987.

Coming from the 30th century ‘s Legion of Superheroes timeline Mandalla, named Tari, is the daughter of female inmate Suni Wahlmunn, of the prison world Takron-Galtos. Tari was hence born while her mother was serving a sentence for embezzlement, Wahlmunn was than giving the right to raise her within the prison planet until the child grew to the age of fourteen. The young child grew up discovering the sterile and highly controlled existence, her developing mental powers started manifesting. When Tari turned the age of fourteen she was transferred to a private school on Wahlmunn’s home-world of Earth.

Tari’s mother never revealed her father’s identity, but from the powers that Tari exhibits, he could be Titanian. Tari can project a thought sphere to engulf her target, causing hallucinatory, distorting effects by interfering with one’s bio-electrical system. Ashamed of her mother’s past, Tari wanted to free herself from the stigma of being born on a prison world.

Traveling to Metropolis Tari decides to apply to the Legion Academy soon after she arrives. Accepted as a student Tari takes on the code name of Mandalla and starts training along with other Academy students. Under the guidance of former Legion members and current teachers at the Academy Dou Damsel and Bouncing Boy.

Retroboot: New Earth

The “Retroboot” returned the Legion to a close approximation of the original team prior to the Five Year Gap. Mandalla had participated in many training missions during field exercises to obtain knowledge on not only power set but also teamwork. On her first mission Mandalla assists Duo Damsel’s group to clean up Dominator base after the Dominators on the planet of Kathoon. She has had regular training sessions over the years, but she never actually achieved Legion membership. Mandalla graduated from the Legion Academy and decided to enter the ranks of the Science Police instead of trying out for the Legion.

Powers and Abilities

Mandalla can project a thought sphere to engulf her target, causing hallucinatory, distorting effects by interfering with one’s bio-electrical system. She has received intensive training on how to best utilize her abilities.

Paraphernalia

Mandalla has also worn a Legion Flight Ring. This ring is also used by students in the Legion Academy when they are in training or on field missions. Legion Flight Rings are composed of a compound known as Valorium, which is derived from the Thanagarian Nth Metal, and possesses similar anti-gravity capabilities. It also acts as a long-range communicator (enabling constant vocal contact with other Legionnaires, even across vast distances of space), a signal device, and a navigational compass, all powered by a micro-computer built inside the ring.
