Mariah received an insectoid egg from a lady’s maid to an officer’s wife in Burma. She used it to impregnate her Lady Lalita Bertram in London. Lalita had thus far failed to give her husband, Lord Harry Bertram, a child. Mariah had an uneasy relation with Lord Bertram: he had once tried to strangle her. By passing the egg on to Lord Bertram, it killed him when it hatched. Mariah and Lalita raised their child William together.
