Matthew Gibbs

Matthew Gibbs was a carpet beater who lived in Notting Hill. On December 10th, 1888 he was arrested for attacking his wife, Annie Gibbs. She claimed that he threatened her with the possibility she would be killed by Jack the Ripper. She further claimed that he had attacked her with a knife several years previously, and displayed the marks on her arms. Matthew requested a separation from his wife. He denied that he attacked his wife, and was remanded into custody. His was one of many cases tied in with the Jack the Ripper hysteria rampant in London at the time. No further documentation of his life or case exist. Â
