Matthew Solomon is a real life detective who has been portrayed in comics. When Solomon was a detective he witnessed a robbery of a diner he was sitting in while he was off duty. He didn’t know the gunman ( Red Collins) and he himself was unarmed but he chased after him anyway and attacked him as he got into a taxi. The two fought and Solomon took a bullet in the chest. It did not kill him and so he grabbed the revolver of the pistol so it could not fire again. The two battled until a bystander hit Red over the head with a bottle. When sentenced to thirty years Red said “I could have killed Solomon easily only I admired his nerve.”

Matthew was later awarded the Scott Medal For Valor.
