Mickey was truly one of the best players of his era and the idol of millions of young baseball fans across America. Mickey and his teammate Roger Maris both had a chance to break Babe Ruth’s single season home run record of 60 home runs in a single sesason back in 1961. Unfortunately for Mickey, he got injured very late in the season and this ruined his chance at the record. Maris was able to just barely break Ruth’s record by one home run. Maris ended up with 61 and Mantle’s total for the season was 54.
