Miranda Mantega was buying a bracelet for her daughter Sofia in Caracas, Venezuela when a riot broke out. When police began to fire at the crowd, Miranda was caught in the crossfire.
Her death forced her daughter to move to America to live with Sofia’s father, Walter Barrett, a man who had previously not been in Sofia’s life.
Sofia later joined the Xavier Institute as the mutant hero Wind Dancer, but later lost her powers during the event now known as M-Day where 90% of the mutant population lost their powers.
She later joined the New Warriors as Renascence and has since had symbolic dreams about her deceased mother. It is not known if Miranda has transcended into a supernatural being or if it is the figment of her imagination.
