Mister E

Major Story Arcs

Mister E is a proto-symbiote created by Knull as part of his early living abyss manipulation experiments. Upon making his way to Earth, Mister E developed ambitions of Godhood and took control of a NASA astronaut named Louis Tuttle, making him his host. Upon returning to Cape Canaveral, Mister E began transforming the staff into his shadow-slaves via the use of an injections. Once under his control, the shadow-slaves began modifying the space shuttle he had arrived in so that he could emit negatron particles that would permanently transform the Sun into a black star, killing the Earth and converting all human life on the planet into his shadow-slaves in the process.

Once this phase of his plan was complete, Mister E intended to take to the stars and conquer every corner of the Universe, but before he could make those deluded dreams a reality it was opposed by Steve Coffin, the current Captain Universe, who pursued Mister E into space and clashed with him aboard the modified space shuttle. Mister E was believed to have been killed along with Louis Tuttle when Steve breached the hull of the space shuttle and forced it to crash into the Sun.

This turned out not to be the case, as Mister E had been given a “second chance” by Knull and was resurrected but a few short months later. Hellbent on appeasing his master, Mister E returned to Earth and snuck into Ravencroft Institute where he made contact with and bonded to Alistare Smythe, who had been a classmate of Louis Tuttle’s in college. From there Mister E set about transforming all of Ravencroft’s staff and inmates into shadow-slaves via an airborne version of the injections he used in Cape Canaveral after which he created an eclipse by channeling the power of the Shadow Realm back through time itself.

Upon encountering Spider-Man, Mister E immediately recognized the black costume he was wearing as a fellow symbiote and embraced him in a hug, calling him “brother” with deep enthusiasm. Which only lead to confusion for Mister E when Spider-Man attacked him, not realizing that Spider-Man’s symbiote was not in control of its host. After being incapacitated by the Black Knight, who made attempts to interrogate him, Mister E managed to somehow break free and escape into the shadows where he assumed the visage of the sorcerer Merlin.

While distracting the Black Knight with his ruse, Mister E sent Ned Leeds to attack J. Jonah Jameson at the Daily Bugle in order to draw Spider-Man away, during which Mister E attempted to convince the Black Knight into handing over the Ebony Blade for safekeeping purposes. However, Mister E’s ruse was uncovered at the last moment when the Black Knight asked him what his real name was and found that Mister E was unable to answer. This lead to Mister E taking the Ebony Blade by force and impaling the Black Knight through the chest with it before fleeing to Knowhere where he conscripted the services of the troll blacksmith Ulicia to have the sword destroyed.

Before Mister E could make any headway in that matter, both he and Ulicia were attacked by her older brother, Ulik, who had been sent to Knowhere to retrieve the sword under the orders of Uatu the Watcher. As the two battled, Spider-Man along with Kang the Conqueror, Rocket Raccoon, the Black Knight, Cosmo the Dog and Captain Marvel (Monica Rambeau), launched a full offensive on Mister E only to have their attacks phased through until the moment came that Captain Marvel used her powers to nullify his intangibility. He was then forcibly separated from Alistare Smythe and imprisoned within The Collector’s showroom by Kang.

Not content with being one of The Collector’s toys, Mister E begged Knull for forgiveness and asked to have his full power restored to him so that he could overwhelm his foes and destroy the Ebony Blade. Knull acquiesced to Mister E’s request and the proto-symbiote escaped from the showroom, after tracking his enemies down, Mister E reclaimed the Ebony Blade only to lose it once again to Captain Marvel. Upon striking Mister E with the sword, Captain Marvel channeled all her power into it, killing him once and for all.
