Moominpappa loves his son Moomintroll and the other young creatures who become part of his family, but attempts to be stern with them (and usually fails). In his youth, he sailed on a long and fantastic voyage, and often has dreams and fantasies of being a great adventurer and brilliant inventor. His wife Moominmamma lovingly avoids pointing out how often she has to do all the hard work.
