The Moonlight Mask tv series was created in 1958 by Kohan Kawauchi, the series was very successful and then in 1972 an animated tv series was lunched and made the character famous outside Japan.
Its first appearance as Manga was in Series in Shonen Club magazine.
He was created as an Japanese answer of Batman.
He is also know as: Gekko Kamen, Capitán Centella or Moon Mask Rider.
