Origin
Mummy was the massively overprotective parent of “Mummy’s Boy“, a child she babied and treated like a helpless infant despite his approaching puberty, suffering a belief bordering on paranoia that he would be injured or hurt if she didn’t monitor and control his every moment. Naturally he railed against this, keen to be like other boys and be allowed to go out and play, but his protests fell on deaf ears and his attempts to escape her clutches invariably caused him to injure himself, which merely confirmed her concerns and caused her to redouble her protectiveness.
Creation
Mummy was created by Norman Mansbridge for Monster Fun #1, 14th June 1975, as part of the strip Mummy’s Boy.
Character Development
The Mummy’s Boy strip proved popular enough to continue throughout the run of Monster Fun and into Buster when the two titles merged. Mummy continued to appear alongside her long suffering son, never learning to cut the apron strings, until the series ended on 12th September 1987.
