Pappy Boyington was a great fighter pilot who started fighting the Japanese for China before the US joined the war in 1942. He was part of the US Marine fighter group. He started the Black Sheep Squad with a group of misfit pilots. A TV show was made about his WWII group in the 70s called BAA BAA BLACK SHEEP, it starred Robert Conrad as Pappy Boyington.
