Peggy Gadling

Peggy Gadling

Margaret, or Peggy as her mother liked to call her, was both in Sydney, Australia in 1899. Feeling restless, Peg ran away from home and, disguised as a boy named Jim, signed onto various ships in order to sail around the world. One ship in particular, The Sea Witch, would change Peg’s life.

This ship happened to be owned by the immortal Robert Gadling, who one day decided to actually ride on it. Coincidentally, Naramsin, another immortal, decided to stow away on that same trip. Naramsin relates his life story to “Jim”, though she is highly skeptical. However her skepticism is thrown out the window when, out of the sea, rises a huge Leviathan.

“Jim” wants to tell the world about this amazing discovery, though all the other sailors are reluctant to admit they ever saw the beast. Gadling explains to “Jim” that there are some things that men would rather keep to themselves than risk admitting it to others, such as the fact that she is actually a girl. “Jim” admits to Gadling that she is actually named Peggy and, at least for a few years, they part ways.

In 1914, Peggy gets caught in a world storm and is trapped in the World’s End Inn where she tells her story about the Sea Witch, and the story Naramsin told her, to the various other guests, claiming that at this point she has never seen Hob Gadling again. (The Sandman #53 – Worlds’ End, Part 3: Hob’s Leviathan)

They must have met again, however, because eventually Peggy and Hob married and had a son together. In May 1941, while meeting with their son in a bar, they are caught in the final attack of the London Blitz. Trapped in a bunker under a bar, Peggy has a heart attack and is unable to get medical attention in time. She dies holding her husband’s hand, fondly remembering the time they saw the Leviathan together. (The Dreaming #32 – London Pride)
