Pongo was a chimp, along with his friend Bongo, had spent time in the big city zoo before returning to the animal community known as Bamboo Town. Their experiences of the wider world had left them more sophisticated than their neighbours, who as a result often turned to the two chimps for advice, causing Bongo and Pongo to frequently arrange activities that the whole town took part in. They appeared together in early issues of the Dandy. Of the pair, Bongo appeared to be more of the idea man, with Pongo following his lead.
