Poseidon was the god of the seas and, as ‘Earth-Shaker’, of earthquakes in Greek mythology.
Like his brother Zeus, Poseidon was known for having many human lovers. He once raped Medusa on the floor of one of the one of Athena’s temples. Angered by the blasphemy, the goddess then changed Medusa into a monster. When she was later beheaded by the hero Perseus, Chrysaor and Pegasus emerged from the blood spilling from her neck.
