In the first episode, Steele is left for dead in Norway, suffering the frostbite which becomes his main characteristic. He sees action in a variety of theatres early in World War Two, repeatedly under suspicion as to whether or not he is pulling is weight, but repeatedly coming through in close action with his bayonet.
