Origin
Proty was a small specimen of his species. His modest size was one of the reasons why Chameleon Boy adopted him as a pet in the latter part of the 30th Century. Although the Proteans are believed to reproduce by genetic fission, they are customarily assigned gender identities by the humans they encounter in a mistaken desire to personalise them.
Creation
Proty was created by Edmond Hamilton and John Forte.
Character Evolution
Silver Age
Taken from his world to dwell with the Legion of Super Heroes on Earth, the telepathic creature developed an affinity for several of the members including Chameleon Boy and Saturn Girl. When Saturn Girl planned to sacrifice herself to restore Lightning Lad to life, Proty knocked her unconscious and took her place with his power to alter his form. His life-force awoke Lightning Lad from the deathly state he was placed in by Zaryan the conqueror, and Proty died. Proty’s legacy lived on in it’s successor Proty II.
Reboot / Earth-247
The Protean race attacked Earth while the Legion was facing the Fatal Five , all but one was destroy. The survivor Protean was adopted as a pet by Lori Morning and named it “Proty”.
