Quan Chi

Pre Mortal Kombat

Quan Chi’s past is shrouded in mystery, he is believed to be from the Netherealm though this is unknown. What is know is that Quan Chi was a roaming sorcerer who happened to stumble upon the fallen Elder God Shinnok who was being tortured and imprisoned by the Netherealm’s current ruler Lucifer. Shinnok promised power to Quan Chi if he could release him and help him fight Lucifer. Quan Chi was constantly searching for power so he accepted the Elder God’s proposal and together they overthrew Lucifer and claimed the Netherealm in Shinnok’s name.

Quan Chi then became the arch-sorcerer of the Netherealm and one of the most powerful magic users in any realm. Quan Chi was then tasked with locating and retrieving Shinnok’s lost amulet so he could regain some measure of his former power. The amulets location was only know to high ranking Shaolin Monks so Quan Chi departed for Outworld to speak to Shang Tsung. Shang Tsung had absorbed the soul of the Great Kung Lao, a Shaolin Monk and champion of Mortal Kombat, in exchange for the information Quan Chi agreed to help Shao Kahn’s cause against Earthrealm at a later date.

Quan Chi was directed towards the Temple of the Elements which was located somewhere in the Himalayas. What Shang Tsung failed ot tell Quan Chi was that no sorcerer could enter this temple so Quan Chi would need to recruit a powerful warrior to retreive it for him. Quan Chi located the Lin Kuei and bargained to have one of their warriors storm the temple and in return Quan Chi would use his magic to wipeout the Shirai Ryu clan. The Lin Kuei accepted his proposal and sent the elder Sub-Zero to storm the temple. Unknown to Sub-Zero or the Lin Kuei, Quan Chi made the same offer to the Shirai Ryu who sent a ninja named Hanzo Hasashi after the amulet.

Sub-Zero was the one to retreive the amulet and he killed Hanzo in cold bold during the raid. Quan Chi then return to the Netherealm with the amulet to further prepare Shinnok’s forces though he did murder all of the Shirai Ryu clan. Sub-Zero was then tasked by Raiden to retreive the amulet from Shinnok and Quan Chi was left to fight him along with his former assassin Sareena. They defeated the sorcerer and Shinnok to retrieve the amulet, though Quan Chi had pulled a fast one and gave Shinnok a copy of the amulet and kept the real one himself.

Quan Chi would spend the following years helping Shinnok amass power and leading the Brotherhood of the Shadow Cult that worshipped the Elder God. Quan Chi would resurrect souls bound to the Netherealm for Shinnok’s army of demons. The most notable was the ninja Hanzo Hasashi who would become Quan Chi’s personal enforcer Scorpion.

Mortal Kombat 4

Shinnok and Quan Chi were ready to invade after Shao Kahn’s failed invasion attempt of Earthrealm. Outworld, Earthrealm, and Edenia all had become vulnerable and Shinnok believed it was time to strike. Quan Chi and Netherealm demons posed as refuges’ seeking asylum in Edenia. With the ambasadores daughter Tanya, secretly a member of Shinnok’s cult, vouching for their authenticity they were granted an audience with Queen Sindel. When his story did not match up Quan Chi gave Sindel an orb that kept her in a trance like state.

This invasion pushed the struggling Edenia over the edge since they still had not recovered from Shao Kahn’s occupation causing Kitana to request Earthrealm’s aid in repealing Shinnok. Once the battle was underway Quan Chi assinged Scorpion to kill the younger Sub-Zero, though this backfired when Scorpion learned Quan Chi was the one responsible for the murder of his family and clan. Quan Chi attempted to banish the ninja spectre though Scorpion was able to grab a hold of Quan Chi before the spell was cast sending them both to the lowest pits of the Netherealm. Scorpion would enjoy torturing the sorcerer for all eternity.

Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance

Quan Chi would wander then Netherealm as Scorpion constantly hunted his former master for revenge. Quan Chi ran into two Oni named Moloch and Drahmin who were natives of the Netherealm. He bargained their freedom from this hell in exchange they would protect him from Scorpion. They did just that and Scorpion was fended off long enough for Quan Chi to find a portal to Outworld though he left the two Oni in the Netherealm creating more enemies for later. When Quan Chi arrived in Outworld he arrived in the long forgotten tomb of the Dragon King.

After studying the scrolls and hieroglyphics Quan Chi found a way to ressurect the mummified remains of his army though he would need the help of another sorcerer, Shang Tsung. Once Quan Chi reached Shang Tsung’s palace in Outworld he was ambushed by Scorpion who had escaped the Netherealm. The fight alerted Shang Tsung to their presence, but Quan Chi was able to drive off Scorpion for the time being. Quan Chi made his proposal to raise the Dragon King’s army and he would open a soulnado to the heavens using Shinnok’s amulet giving Shang Tsung an endless supply of souls which would grant him immortality. The agreed to work together and the Deadly Alliance was formed.

The Alliance’s first target was to eliminate the two greatest threats to their cause, Shao Kahn and Liu Kang. In a feigned plea of loyalty during an audience with the Emperor Quan Chi and Shang Tsung jumped and killed the Emperor of Outworld and gained Kano as a follower. They then traveled through a portal to Earthrealm where Shang Tsung impersonated Kung lao to get close to Liu Kang.

During their fight Liu had the upper hand until Quan Chi struck him from behind allowing Shang Tsung to break Liu Kang’s neck and absorb his soul. After returning to Outworld Kano’s troops capture a small Outworld village and forced the inhabitants to build a palace to house the massive soulnado the Shang Tsung needed. When a villager named Li Mei attacked Kano Quan Chi and Shang Tsung offered to free her people should she win a tournament against some of Kano’s Black Dragons.

This was merely a distraction to keep her from causing riots among the workers. They also hired the Red Dragon Mavado to eliminate the blind swordsman Kenshi who was spying on Shang Tsung, in return they would turn over Kano for Mavado to kill. Mavado was succesful in mortally wounding Kenshi and did receive Kano as a prize. Li Mei also was able to win her tournament and demanded her prize.

She was going to have her soul transferred into one of the Dragon King’s soldiers when the Earthrealm warriors arrived and interrupted the process. Bo Rai Cho escaped with Li Mei while the rest fought off the Deadly Alliance and their Tarkatan hordes. The Earthrealm warriors would fail and be slain that day, Quan Chi was able to fight and kill Princess Kitana one on one. Leaving the Thunder God Raiden to fight the Deadly Alliance by himself. The battle looked to be in Raiden’s favor though the sorcerers eventually defeated him.

With victory assured for both the sorcerers they turned on each other when their paranoia grew to much. Quan Chi emerged victoroius though was unable to taste victory since the reborn Dragon King entered the throne room and reclaimed his army. Quan Chi, Shang Tsung and Raiden joined forces to eliminate Onaga though they were unable to damage him. Raiden tried a suicide attack that left the palace in ruins and killed Shang Tsung in the process. Onaga survived without a scratch and Quan Chi was able to escape, but lost Shinnok’s amulet in the process.

Mortal Kombat Armageddon

Quan Chi makes an unexpected return once again following Shinnok’s orders. He has since reclaimed the amulet from the Dragon King and now seeks the god like power that Blaze will bestow to the one who defeats him. Under Shinnok’s orders Quan Chi forms an alliance with Onaga, Shao Kahn, and Shang Tsung in the hopes that at least one of them would receive the power instead of one of the heroic fighters. Quan Chi became aware of Daegon and Taven’s quest to end the conflict once and for all and was ordered by Shinnok to stop Taven.

Quan Chi located the cavern where Taven was placed in hibernation and dealt his dragon guardian Orin a mortal blow to prevent the dragon from teleporting Taven anywhere. Orin though still had enough strength to allow Taven into Outwolrd to hunt the sorcerer down. During the battle itself Quan Chi would have his leg broken by Jax, but would go on the deal Kenshi a mortal blow by impaling him on his sword, though he himself would be killed when Shang Tsung telekinetically threw him down the Pyramids flight of stairs.

Shao Kahn would become the eventual winner and defeated Blaze gaining god-like power over the realms. Raiden being the last survior sent a message back in time to try and change events so Armageddon would not come to pass ultimately changing history

Mortal Kombat (2011): “The Netherrealm has produced many vile beings, but none rival the Arch-Sorcerer Quan Chi. In lieu of Netherrealm demons, he prefers to resurrect deceased warriors for use in his sinister plans. Foremost among them is the tortured Shirai Ryu ninja Scorpion, who is Quan Chi’s personal assassin. Quan Chi is building an army of such specters–the purpose of which has yet to be revealed. Another mystery is the sorcerer’s involvement in the Mortal Kombat tournament. The Netherrealm has no stake in its outcome, which leads some observers to question his presence…”

Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe

After arguing with the Emperor, Raiden appeared and confronted the two. While he argueed with Shao Kahn, Quan Chi tried to slip through a portal to escape Raiden’s wrath. Shao Kahn betrayed Quan Chi and smacked him with his hammer in revenge.

Raiden the proceeded to shock Shao Kahn while he was in the portal. This sent his body spiraling into another universe where he fused with Darkseid and became Dark Kahn. Quan Chi was then imprisoned in the Netherealm by Raiden and the Elder Gods. Quan Chi remained the till the younger Sub-Zero came seeking information on the merging worlds. Quan Chi had his enforcer Scorpion fight Sub-Zero so their conflict would hasten a merging point in the Netherealm and break his bonds. Quan Chi them left Sub-Zero with a cryptic message.

If Raiden wished to defeat this merging he would have to ally himself with devils. Quan Chi then sent Scorpion to find Princess Kitana who had seen the enemy. Quan Chi then met up with Shang Tsung and instructed him to eliminate Captain Marvel, seeing him as a powerful threat. Quan Chi was able to deliver Kitana to Raiden’s forces and used the last of his magic to purge her from the combat rage that blinded her. Quan Chi was noticeably absent during the final battle due to using all hus magic though he was the one to gather both sides against the DC heroes.
