Joe was traveling with his family to Hawaii when the small private jet they were in experienced extreme turbulence. The pilot was ill-equipped for such circumstances and the plane went down in a raging Pacific Ocean. Washed ashore on a very small island, Joe did what he could to survive, despite his grief for the presumed loss of his wife and children. He vowed revenge on the pilot, if he had survived the crash. Being alone and starving for a long time on the tiny island affected Joe and his rage at the pilot grew over time. While attempting to spear fish one sunny morning, Joe discovered the Blue Sapphire necklace that the goddess Clover planted just offshore for him to find. When he donned the necklace, he was enveloped in a sapphire blue aura and started to fly. Immediately understanding he now had powers, like the supers and Deviations he’d been reading about on social media, he flew East to find and punish the pilot.
