Randy Clayton was the son of a ranch owner in the Old West. When his scheming uncle Cash attempted to take over by having Randy and his son killed, The Rawhide Kid arrived in time to save Randy, but his father, Jesse Clayton, was murdered. When The Kid figured out Cash’s scheme, Cash was killed after falling on a stalagmite during a fight with The Kid. Realizing that Randy had no one left, The Rawhide kid took him as his partner, and became his guardian.
