Rika Minami (???, Minami Rika) is a supporting character of the manga/anime series Highschool of the Dead that was written by Daisuke Sato and illustrated by Shouji Sato. The series first began serialization in Fujimi Shobo’s Monthly Dragon Age magazine in July 2006.

Her first appearance was in Hightschool of the Dead Volume 2 CH. 5 “Streets of the Dead”, and her first anime appearance was in Highschool of the Dead – Episode 5 “Spring of the Dead”. Her character in the Japanese series is voiced by Junko Takeuchi, and the U.S. dub produced by Section 23 is done by Melissa Davis.

As a police officer in the SAT, Rika Minami has access to a large variety of firearms, some of which that she collects are highly illegal in the Japan and have been specially customize. The weapon she uses professionally is the Heckler & Koch PSG-1. It’s made in Germany and developed for the police and based off the militaryG3 Rifle.It’s 1208mm long, weighs 801kg, and 7.26mm x 20 caliber. Her sidearm is a 9mm Sig Sauer P226 pistol. It’s equipped with a red-dot sight and mini-flashlight.

Other weapons she owns are the Springfield M1A1 Super Mach rile, the Knight’s SR-25 Type Armalite AR-10 V rifle, Itthaca M-37 shotgun, and Barnett Wildcat C5 crossbow. All of these weapons were kept locked at her home and were taken by the survivors with her friend, Shizuka.

Anime Adaptation

In the anime that was produced by Madhouse, the events of Rika and Tajima’s mission for the tanker was cut from the story. It quickly skipped to the scene just before the EMP.

HOTD: Drifters of the Dead OVA

Rika has a very brief appearance in the Highschool of the Dead OVA titled Drifters of the Dead. It was originally released as a Blu-ray and packaged with a special edition of Highschool of the Dead Vol. 7 on April 26th 2011. She appears in the hallucination of Shizuka Marikawa, and has no spoken lines. She and her students had accidentally burned hydrangea leaves in a cooking fire. The fumes sent them all into a hallucinogenic state. Shizuka had mistaken Saya Takagi as Rika. In her imagination, Shizuka and Rika were laying in bed together when Rika suddenly started to remove her clothes and cuddle.
