Roobarb

Origin

Roobarb is an ever-cheery green dog who lives in a house with a large garden, and who enjoys numerous misadventures, much to the annoyance of fellow pet, the cat Custard, who frequently tries to spoil Roobarb’s fun. Despite this mild antagonism, the pair do manage to get along from time to time.

Creation

Roobarb was created in 1974 by writer Grange Calveley and animator Bob Godfrey for a series of short cartoons aimed at children and originally produced for BBC1. Actor Richard Briers provided the series’ narration and all character voices. Roobarb and Custard both transferred to comics, gaining a strip in TV Comic.
