Sometime later he encounters the Defenders, when he becomes involved in a murder case with the Defenders and two detectives from his hometown, Typhoon and Cutlass. It was during this time Rufus admitts to having a crush on the woman detective named Typhoon. He asks her out, even though he knows she is married. She harshly rejects his offer.

Some months later, Rufus again comes into contact with some of the Defenders when he drives Hellstrom and Hellcat towards a mystery mansion. Later on, he also comes into contact with the Defenders Beast and Iceman. All of them dislike Rufus for his extreme way of cab-driving and strange comments. Rufus however helps out his newfound ‘friends’ til the murder-case is solved. At the end of the issue he seems to somehow come into possession of the Lesser Grey God, a sculpture of great mystical power, which he uses as a hood ornament.
