Sailor Moon

The daughter of Queen Serenity of the Moon Kingdom, Princess Serenity grew up in the ‘Silver Millennium Era’. An era of peace, many of Princesses from surrounding planets travelled to the Moon Kingdom for festivities. These Princesses were Princess Serenity’s friends and her guardians. Princess Serenity was a sweet and gentle soul, often gazing upon the planet Earth; she longed to see the lakes and trees of which this planet boasted.

During one of the balls, the Princess fell in love with the Prince of Earth, Prince Endymion. But this love was forbidden as they were born on different planets. Before this ‘Romeo & Juliet’ could find happiness together, the thousand years of peace the Queen Serenity had brought on, was destroyed.

A woman on Earth by the name of Beryl was possessed by Queen Metallia. Beryl had been jealous of Princess Serenity because she knew of her secret love affair with Prince Endymion and so accepted Queen Metallia’s evil energy force. Beryl then began to take over the Earth and possess the minds of the humans, including Prince Endymion’s four generals. Using the powers of the Dark Kingdom and her Dark Kingdom Warriors (four of Prince Endymion’s generals who were brainwashed by Beryl), Queen Beryl set her sights on the Moon Kingdom.

During the strife on Earth, Prince Endymion managed to escape to the Moon to warn Princess Serenity. The moon has been lost to chaos, and no one trusts humans as they have all come under the influence of mind control. Prince Endymion tells Princess Serenity that he loves her and though their love may be forbidden, he will do his best to help protect the Moon Kingdom. They share a final kiss and then he is off to help the Sailor Senshi (Princess Serenity’s Guardians) fight the battle against the Dark Kingdom.

As the Moon Kingdom falls to rubble, Queen Beryl attacks Princess Serenity. At this point, the Moon’s army and the Sailor Senshi have all fallen in battle. Prince Endymion rushes to save the Princess.

Prince Endymion was killed as he covers the Princess to protect her from the blast. Princess Serenity then takes his sword and kills herself as she cannot live without him.

Queen Serenity finds the couple both dead and states “I felt this love affair end sadly. A love between the Earth and the Moon could never be. I’ll seal it away…that demon and this Moon…and give you to the future! This time…you’ll be born on the same planet and you’ll find happiness there.” Using the power of the Imperium Crystal, she sends the members of the Moon Kingdom, including the sailor senshi, Dark Kingdom, Prince Endymion and Princess Serenity to Earth, 1000 years in the future.

Now, 1000 years in the future, no one remembers anything about the Moon Kingdom or the Silver Millennium. All the characters have been reborn.

Luna, one of Queen Serenity’s advisors, finds Usagi Tsukino and tells her that she is the leader of the Sailor Senshi. Her duty is to find the other Sailor Senshi and the Imperium Silver Crystal which will then reveal the identity of the ‘Moon Princess’. Thus begins the journey of Sailor Moon and her Sailor Scouts.

Creation

The original name of this series is “美少女戦士セーラームーン” which translates into “Pretty Soldier Sailormoon”.

The series was created by Naoko Takeuchi, a manga artist, in 1991. Pretty Soldier Sailormoon is actually a sequel to a manga series that Naoko Takeuchi had been writing before called Codename: Sailor V. Sailor Moon is the product of Naoko Takeuchi being approached to adapt Codename: Sailor V into an anime series.

The original manga spans 52 acts and appears in Nakayoshi, Kodansha’s shōjo manga magazine, from 1991-1995. The manga volumes came out between 1992- 1997 and have since been redone in 2003. The second edition features new art, revised dialogue and is in 12 volumes instead of the original 18. The second edition was recently re-released in 2011 and so far 5 volumes have been published.

Artist Naoko Takeuchi has stated that Sailor Moon is most like her out of any of her characters. Her hair design was also inspired by a good luck token that Naoko used while in post-secondary school.

It has been 1000 years since Queen Serenity has given her daughter a second chance at her love story. Usagi is a fourteen year old now, a little lazy, frequents the arcade and loves to eat sweets. One day she trips over a black cat and takes her home. Once home, the cat reveals that it can speak, introducing herself as Luna and tells Usagi that she is in fact a Sailor Senshi and she has a mission. She must locate the ‘Princess’. In order to do this she will need the help of the other Sailor Senshi and will need to find them as well. Sailor Moon also meets Tuxedo Mask during her first battle with the Dark Kingdom.

Meanwhile, Usagi meets a boy while on her way to school one day who starts to call her “buns” or in the English manga/comics/anime, “meatball head”. This boy will show up over the course of her adventure and often she will compare him to Tuxedo Mask due to an uncanny resemblance. His name is Mamoru Chiba.

Sailor Moon soon meets three other scouts, the first being Sailor Mercury who turns out to be another student at her school, Ami Mizuno. Ami receives her transformation pen from the Sailor V video game that Usagi frequently plays at her local arcade one day while hanging out with Serena. She leaves in a hurry as she is late for her special computer class and leaves a disk behind. Usagi and Luna check out the disk and discover that it’s actually from the Negaverse and being used to brainwash people into helping them locate the Silver Imperium Crystal. Usagi hurries to Ami’s school and while she battles the Negaverse Monster, Ami transforms into Sailor Mercury.

The second Sailor Scout that we meet is Sailor Mars, who is a Shinto Priestess named Rei Hinto. Usagi meets Rei because people are starting to go missing on a local bus that picks up people from her shrine. Initially, Usagi follows Rei home because she is entranced by her beauty. Her beauty and calm make Luna think that she might be the Moon Princess or at the very least a scout. One day, while Usagi is leaving the shrine she sees the “Phantom Bus” start to disappear into a wall with Rei in it. She quickly follows the bus and while battling the Negaverse Rei receives a transformation pen from Luna, turning her into Sailor Mars. During this encounter, they come face to face with Jadeite, a general of the Negaverse. Sailor Moon also loses her Tiara in this battle.

Before we meet the fourth Sailor Scout, Usagi receives a new Tiara while investigating a potential ‘Princess’ and shares a special moment with Tuxedo Mask where they kiss. During this chapter it is also discovered that Tuxedo Mask is after the Imperium Silver Crystal as well.

Third we meet Sailor Jupiter, Makoto Kino, who is a transfer student to Usagi’s school. She saves Usagi’s life when she is almost hit by a car when crossing the street. She is somewhat of a loner as all the kids are scared of her since they are rumours she was expelled from her last school for fighting. Usagi isn’t scared though and quickly befriends her, bringing her to the Arcade. Makoto develops a crush on Andrew, the boy who works at the arcade and is lured into a trap by the Negaverse by using an Andrew look a-like. It is during this trap that Luna gives Makoto a transformation pen and it is discovered that she is Sailor Jupiter. In this battle, the second of the generals, Nephrite, dies. It is after this battle that Luna gives Usagi the Crescent Moon Wand and proclaims her the leader of the scouts.

At this time, the Scouts also learn that Luna is from the Moon and that the Princess is actually the Moon Princess. Usagi begins to wonder if Sailor V is one of them and notices that the wand in the game is very similar to the wand that Luna gave her. The news channel releases a broadcast stating that states a priceless crystal is missing from Tuxedo Mask. This sends the nation into a frenzy. Luna takes Ami to the Arcade and reveals to her that behind the Sailor V video game is also a secret base with a computer that is connected to the Moon’s database. They discover that the Negaverse is using Tokyo Tower’s tv antennas to transmit their power and steal people’s energy/life force. These waves knock out Usagi and she is discovered by Tuxedo Mask. She confronts him about the news broadcast and he tells her that he didn’t mean for the Negaverse to get involved. He tells her to transform and she is surprised he knows she is Sailor Moon. Sailor Moon uses the Crescent Moon Wand for the first time and brings all of the people affected by the Dark Kingdom’s magic, back to life. This use of all her power makes her pass out and Tuxedo Mask carries her to his home.

When Usagi wakes up she is surprised to discover that she is with Mamoru Chiba and he is actually Tuxedo Mask. She learns that he has no powers but he needs the crystal to help him remember his past. He lost his memories in the car accident that killed his parents and all that he has left are dreams where he is told to find the Silver Imperium Crystal.

She leaves Mamoru and doesn’t tell the scouts that he knows her secret or that he is Tuxedo Mask. The Negaverse once again tries to find the Crystal by distributing a Dark Video that brainwashes people into trying to capture Sailor Moon. The scouts get trapped in the Arcade and the Sailor V game speaks to Sailor Moon, telling her to save everyone. She faces off against the Negaverse and Zoisite gets a hold of her. Tuxedo Mask and the scouts seem beaten until Sailor V arrives on the scene. Sailor V destroys Zoisite and Artemis, her cat tells the scouts that she is Princess Serenity of the Moon Kingdom. Just as he tells the scouts this, Sailor Moon’s tiara changes into a crescent moon shaped tiara. Sailor Moon also learns that Sailor V has been training her through the Sailor V videogame. Sailor V tells the scouts that she has been researching the enemy and that long ago this enemy destroyed the Moon Kingdom. Usagi wakes up from dreams calling out Endymion and recalling that he called her Serenity but writes it off as happening because she just met the Princess.

Kunzite, the last of the generals, cuts off the electricity in Tokyo and the scouts go to battle him. *Note that during this battle, Tuxedo Mask comments on how strong and confident Sailor Moon has become.* Kunzite is absorbing all the scouts powers and about to send it back to them when Sailor Moon uses her wand to protect Sailor V, the “princess”. Sailor V yells for everyone to protect Sailor Moon, but it is too late. Tuxedo Mask throws himself in front of her taking the blast from Kunzite and seriously injuring himself. As he lays there, about to die, Sailor Moon calls him Endymion and he reaches out, finally remembering who he is and that she is Princess Serenity. Her forehead begins to glow and the crescent moon appears, transforming her into the Princess of the Moon. The mark on Sailor V’s forehead disappears. All of the scouts begin to get their memories back and they all remember the Silver Millennium. One of Usagi’s tears fall from her eye and turns into the Silver Imperium Crystal. Part of the crystal goes into Prince Endymion to preserve his life. Queen Beryl commands Kunzite to capture the Princess and crystal but he only manages to get Prince Endymion. Shortly after this battle, the scouts and Sailor Moon return to the Moon to learn about their past. They meet Selene, Goddess of the Moon, and former Queen of the Silver Millenium, Usagi’s mother. They speak to her about what happened so many years ago and receive a stone sword, a sword that is meant to protect the Princess.

Returning to Earth, the scouts battle Kunzite and defeat him. The four generals have turned into the stones they were named for. Queen Beryl uses Metallia’s power and awakens Mamoru from the sleep she has put him in to brainwash him. She tells him to go to Earth, kill the princess and bring her Imperium Silver Crystal.

Mamoru attempts to steal the Imperium Silver Crystal from Usagi, ultimately infiltrating their headquarters in the Arcade and seriously injuring them. He manages to get the crystal and Queen Beryl appears. She places Sailor Moon in a death grip and the scouts battle her. Sailor V calls upon the Moon Sword and finally kills Beryl. She reads an inscription on the sword and falls to the ground. Prince Endymion grabs her and takes her with him through a portal that Sailor Moon follows them through. The other scouts try to find them and follow them to the Arctic Circle.

Sailor Moon finds herself in the Dark Kingdom with Prince Endymion who is bent on destroying her and finding out the secret of the Imperium Silver Crystal’s power. Sailor V wakes up and tells Sailor Moon that in order to seal Queen Metallia and the Dark Kingdom away for good, she must get the part of the Silver Imperium Crystal she gave to Prince Endymion back to fully activate the crystal. Sailor Moon, in tears, grabs the Moon Sword and runs to Endymion, kissing him just before thrusting the sword through his heart and then hers, killing them both.

The Imperium Silver Crystal encases them both and Queen Metallia swallows them whole. Sailor Mars, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus all sacrifice their lives to awaken the Princess. Usagi wakes up alone inside Mettallia and tries to use the crystal to defeat her. Prince Endymion wakes up slowly and realizes that four stones in his pocket saved him from the blow of the sword, his four generals had saved his life. Zoisite, Kunzite, Zephrite and Jadeite advise him that Metallia’s heart is in the dark spot on her forehead and that they can destroy her by aiming at it.

Prince Endymion advises Sailor Moon of this and together they use the power of the Imperium Silver Crystal to defeat Metallia. The power of the crystal also restored the Moon Castle to its glory on the moon, where Luna and Artemis are praying for Sailor Moon to win. Sailor Moon collapses to the floor in exhaustion and is awakened by Endymion’s kiss. Her locket was destroyed in the battle and she can no longer morph. Luna calls to her to come to the moon and when she arrives is told that the kingdom has been restored and she must become the new queen of the Silver Millenium. Usagi tells Luna that she won’t do it because she has family on Earth. Queen Serenity leaves a new locket for Usagi with a special place for her crystal that will give her stronger powers.

Usagi returns to Earth where she uses her Crescent Moon Wand to revive her friends. Together they all return home, finally at peace.

Black Moon

This story is based off the future, specifically the 30 century. The future is ruled by Neo-Queen Serenity and King Endymion in Crystal Tokyo. Crystal Tokyo was attacked by the Black Moon family and Neo-Queen Serenity is in a deep slumber protected by the silver crystal. The arc kicks off with Usagi and Mamoru kissing in a park when a portal opens up above them and out falls Chibiusa from the future. She manages to hypnotize Usagi’s family and convince them to let her stay with them.

Over the course of this arc Usagi and Chibiusa have a few quarrels and ultimately Usagi is jealous of her developing relationship with Mamoru. Chibiusa was not the only person from the future to travel to the past though and the scouts do battle with the Black Moon family, they start to be captured until all that remain are Sailor Venus and Sailor Moon. Chibiusa finally steals the Imperium Silver Crystal from Usagi and when Usagi and Mina track her down, they discover that Chibiusa is trying to her save her parents and came to the past to find Sailor Moon, who she had heard so many stories about. Sailor Venus, Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask decide to go with Chibiusa to the future to try and understand what the Black Moon is doing. Upon entering the time warp, they meet Sailor Pluto, the secret guardian of time who never leaves her post.

As they enter Crystal Tokyo they are greeted by King Endymion and Usagi, along with the others, learn that Chibiusa is actually her self’s and Mamoru’s daughter. Shortly, Usagi is captured by the Black Moon family and taken to Nemesis, their planet. Prince Dimande of the Black Moon family tries to hypnotize Usagi into ruling the universe by his side but she manages to break free and find the three captured scouts, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter and Sailor Mercury. Just as they return to the time warp, Chibiusa is approached by Wiseman, the guiding force to the Black Moon’s objectives. He transforms her into Black Lady and she manages to hypnotize Mamoru, who followed her. An ultimate showdown eventually begins in the 30 century between Sailor Moon and Black Lady.

The scouts have been worn out and Prince Dimande is finally realizing that Wiseman had his own agenda. Diana, knowing that the scouts and Sailor Moon are too drained to continue, finds Sailor Pluto in the time warp and begs her to help. Sailor Pluto breaks the second taboo and leaves her post as guardian of time to help the scouts. As she enters the battle, she sees Prince Dimande holding both Imperium Silver Crystals of the past and future and is about to join them which will destroy everyone and everything. She makes the ultimate sacrifice and stops time, breaking the third taboo and destroying herself.

Sailor Moon takes both crystals from Prince Dimande who is killed by Wiseman and Black Lady begins to cry at Pluto’s death. This makes Black Lady morph into Sailor Mini-Moon, finally realizing her true powers and releasing both her and Mamoru from Wiseman’s grasp. Sailor Moon and Mamoru follow Wiseman to his true self, which is actually planet Nemesis just as Neo-Queen Serenity and the rest of her court awaken. After a swift emotional reunion between mother and daughter, Chibiusa follows Sailor Moon using a time key and Sailor Moon destroys planet Nemesis by borrowing both Chibiusa’s and Mamoru’s strength. As the Sailor Scouts and Mamoru return to 21 century, Neo-Queen Serenity bestows upon the Sailor Scouts new powers.

Just as Mamoru and Usagi say goodbye to Chibiusa, she returns from the past with a letter from Neo-Queen Serenity thanking Sailor Moon and the scouts for offering to train her as a Sailor Scout. Usagi and the scouts meet after school at the arcade and learn about a new school that has recently opened up called Infinity College. The news reported that one of the students from there suddenly turned into a beast and attacked people, calling it genetic regression. They decide to investigate the school. Usagi uses her Luna Moon Pen to transform into a student and enters the school leaving the scouts behind. Hearing beautiful music, the girls are drawn to it. Usagi sees Michiru, a student who says tells Usagi “someday it will destroy you”, while Raye, Lita, Mina and Amy are intercepted by Hakura who advises them to “stay out of it”.

As Usagi leaves the school to avoid being caught by a teacher, she runs into Chibiusa who is outside trying to talk to a girl who seems to be sick. Just then, both of their brooches react and some sort of creature attacks them. Sailor Moon destroys the creature using her new sceptre, a gift from Neo-Queen Serenity. Chibiusa was cut in the battle and the girl she had been talking to takes a look at it. The girl heals the cut for Chibiusa and she asks her name, which we learn is Hotaru Tomoe. While this is happening, two new people enter the scene wearing a sailor scout costume and tuxedo mask costume. They disappear just as quickly and someone comes outside to inquire after Hotaru. Hotaru goes inside with her and speaks to her father, the Professor who gives her a family heirloom amulet before she goes to bed.

Mamoru begins receiving dreams about three talismans. On Raye’s fifteenth birthday she goes to a mountaintop retreat to cleanse herself. The scouts learn that Infinity College hosts an initiation camp there and quickly follow. At night they witness the leader of the camp, Eudial of the Witches 5, start to steal the students’ spirit. The Witches 5 are part of the Death Busters who appear to stealing souls to try and find vessels for people from the Tau Nebula.

All of the scouts continue to have dreams about the Talismans and eventually discover that Michiru and Hakura are actually Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune, two scouts like Neptune who had separate duties. Chibiusa needed help with a school project and Usagi learns about the Holy Grail, which Chibiusa says Neo-Queen Serenity was given when she was younger. Sailor Moon and the scouts battle Tellu, another member of the Witches 5 when Sailor Uranus, Sailor Neptune and Sailor Pluto arrive.

No Caption Provided

Sailor Pluto was reborn on Earth, sent by Neo-Queen Serenity to fulfill a special mission. The three outer planet Sailor Scouts tell Princess Serenity, Prince Endymion and the other scouts that they cannot help them and must stay out of this fight as they have been more powers and special tools (the three talismans). They have to destroy the new enemy and Goddess of Destruction. At this point, we also learn that Sailor Uranus is a boy and a girl. Note that during this story line Hakura and Usagi have shared a kiss and Usagi seems to have sort of emotial attachment to him/her.

The final member of the Witches 5, Cyprine & Petit Roll, tracks down Sailor Uranus and as the four inner scouts arrive her magic makes the sailor scouts turn on one another, inner scouts vs. outer scouts. Sailor Moon, distraught over the fighting, is reached by Mamoru and Chibiusa. Their belief in the unity of the scouts brings forth the real Holy Grail. This event encourages Sailor Pluto, Uranus and Neptune to divulge who the Goddess of Destruction is. When the Silver Millennium was destroyed all those years ago, the three of them were forbidden to leave their posts. Their talismans resonated as the kingdom fell to dust and the Sailor Scout of Destruction, Death and Rebirth was awoken, Sailor Saturn. When she lowered her Silence Glaive, the three of them were destroyed. By some accident of chance, Sailor Saturn was reborn on Earth as Hotaru Tomoe. Sailor Pluto, Neptune and Uranus believe they must kill her before she awakens in order to avoid the end of the world, which is what she signifies as the guide to the afterlife.

No Caption Provided

Chibiusa does not agree with this and goes to try to protect Hotaru. As Chibiusa reaches Hotaru, Hotaru steals her Imperium Silver Crystal essentially killing her. Mamoru keeps her alive by sharing his life force with her. Sailor Moon and the scouts enter the Trinity College and come face to face with Mistress 9 who has taken over Hotaru’s body. Mistress 9 is trying to bring Master Pharaoh 50 from the Tau Nebula where the Death Busters are from. Hotaru and Sailor Saturn ultimately defeat Mistress 9 from within and Sailor Saturn awakens. She drops her silence glaive and takes the Death Busters back to their realm where they belong. Sailor Pluto closes the fourth dimension behind them and the outer scouts discover a baby Sailor Saturn left behind. The arc ends with the outer scouts leaving with the baby Sailor Saturn.

Powers

No Caption Provided

Sailor Moon possesses many magical items that help her to ‘purify’ her enemies. Her powers usually involve healing and love rather than destruction.

Weapons in her arsenal include:

Locket: This is the item that initially helped Usagi transform into Sailor Moon. It was a decorative piece and as Usagi’s powers/costume changed, so did the locket.

Tiara: Usagi was able to turn her tiara into a flying disc with a ‘boomerang’. She is able to destroy Negaverse droids using the tiara. Her tiara was lost in her first major story arc and later she was given a new one by Luna.

Disguise Pen: This pen was given to Sailor moon by Luna and allows Usagi to transform into any disguise.

Crescent Moon Wand: The Crescent Moon wand has served several functions. It was used by Queen Serenity to transport Princess Serenity, the Sailor Scouts, Prince Endymion and the Dark Kingdom to Earth. It also has a healing power that was demonstrated when Sailor Moon healed the hosts of the Rainbow Crystals. Sailor Moon also used this wand to destroy Queen Beryl in the end of the first story arc.

Moon Sceptre: This was Sailor Moon’s second instrument. It was used to destroy the members of the Negamoon and like its predecessor had healing properties as well.

The Crystal Locket: The crystal locket is a transformation of the original locket. This locket had the power to transform members of the Negamoon into humans.

Imperium Silver Crystal: This crystal is a part of many Usagi’s instruments. It was used by Queen Serenity to banish the Ice Princess to the outer reaches of the universe over 4 million years ago. It was also used in conjunction with the Crescent Moon Wand to save Princess Serenity, Prince Endymion and the Sailor Senshi when Queen Beryl destroyed the Moon Kingdom. Princess Serenity has used it multiple times as well to defeat Queen Beryl and other enemies or heal people. The crystal has also been known to protect Usagi like what happened in the Dark Moon story arc. The crystal encased Neo-Queen Serenity in a protective crystal prism, placing her in a sleep to shield her from the Dark Moon.

Spiral Heart Sceptre: The Spiral Heart Sceptre is created from the love of Usagi and Mamoru. She receives this after her locket is destroyed and she is unable to become Sailor Moon. It is used to destroy enemies with ‘love power’.

Kaleidomoon Scope: Sailor Moon receives this as a gift from Helios in Yume. He turns a kaleidoscope that she received from Mamoru into a weapon to help defeat the Amazon Quartet.

Each of these arcs corresponds with the five arcs in the manga series. Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon was a live-action series that aired in Japan. It ran for 49 episodes from 2003-2004. The live action series was based off of the first major story arc. Sailor Moon – The Novels

No Caption Provided

The novels are based on the American Anime series and use the English version of all character names. It was published by TokyoPop in 1999 and went from Volume 1 – 8. The target audience was 8-12 and ended ‘mid-season’ of the dubbed anime series. The series got a lot of backlash from fans for interwining continuities from manga, anime and dubbed anime which all had somewhat different storylines, as well as having oddly heavy product placement and pop culture references, most of which were inappropriate for a story set in Japan and the occasional fourth wall breaking .

On the other hand, the novels have received some praise for covering some episodes that were cut from the dub, which at the time of the novels publishing would have been the only way of knowing what happened in these episodes (unless one imported the laserdiscs from Japan). They were also credited as, for the most part, having believable and good characterizations of the characters and for reading like a dub episode would. Some particularly praised the writer Lianne Sentar, who was a genuine fan of the anime as she actually started out writing Sailor Moon fanfiction.
