Sawada

Character created for the Street Fighter film, played by Japanese actor Kenya Sawada, is a friend of Guile at A.N. (Allied Nations), where he holds the rank of Captain.

Kenya Sawada also collaborated with the script for Street Fighter II V.

Sawada does not appear in the adaptation published by DC Comics.

Creation

Initially, Capcom had cast the Japanese actor Kenya Sawada in the role of Ryu, however, due to his poor knowledge of English, the role was given to Byron Mann, Capcom still wanted Sawada in the film and Captain Sawada was created for him.

Brazilian Comics

In the Brazilian comic, Sawada is the Captain of the Armed Forces of United Nations, he first appears in issue 14, first part of the 3 part arc “A Ilha da Morte” (The Island of Death), written by Alexandre Nagado, after Guile is presumed dead, Sawada recruits Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li and Cammy to face the Shadow Law, although Shadowlaw and Shadaloo are the names of the same organization, in this continuity they are separate organizations, Shadow Law created by Sagat, Vega and Balrog after the apparent death of M. Bison in issue 8, although Sawada is a character in the film, the events of the film do not influence the comic, Sawada introduces himself as a friend of Guile and doesn’t know Ryu and Ken, the way the duo meets Guile is the same as in the Street Fighter II V anime series.

Sawada appears in two games inspired by the movie with the same title: Street Fighter: The Movie, one for arcade and one for PlayStation and Sega Saturn, just like the first Mortal Kombat games, the images of the actors were digitized for the games, the Kenya Sawada himself had his images scanned, the character’s moves resemble that of Guile and Fei Long (character who did not appear in the movie but appeared in the animated series).

Sawada makes an appearance in the PlayStation 3 game Mainichi Issho (2006), released only in Japan and which has no involvement of Capcom.

Neco Drops 2, Sawada appears as a cat named Sawanya.

Although it does not appear in the games, Sawada had a Shadaloo C.R.I. profile.

In Street Fighter V: A Visionary Book he says he is a member of the United States Air Force and a former friend and current rival of Charlie.

Animated series

Despite being an ally of Guile in the movie, in the Animated Series inspired by the same, the setting is different, Sawada (voice of Michael Dobson) testifies against Guile and he was discharged from the AN, causing Sawada to gain the rank of Colonel, formerly belonging to Guile, the series shows the two as rivals, unlike the movie, Sawada did not support Guile’s invasion of Shadaloo.
