Senator Wright was the third wing presidential candidate working for the Red Skull. For a while Wright was not even considered in serious running for the presidency until the Skull’s Captain America, the Grand Director, appeared at a rally in costume and saved the Senator from “assassins” hired by the Skull.This caused major media attention to be directed towards Wright. The Skull also staged another “assassination attempt” on the Senator in which Wright would take a bullet for another candidate so he would appear to be a hero. The real Captain America prevented this from happening and the Black Widow then forced the Senator to withdraw and step down or face exposure of his ties to the Skull.
