Vogel comes from Averland, a state under the Empire’s control. Averland is connected to Black Fire Pass, which leads to the World’s Edge Mountains from the Dark Lands. Due to the location Vogel and his men regularly find themselves pitted against Orcs and Goblins.
He is a member of the Empire’s army and as such is entrusted with its defense. More precisely he is a Sergeant of the Greatsword’s elite unit, who motto is “never retreat, only move forward”. However Sergeant Vogel has issued the order to retreat to his men in midst of a battle with overwhelming numbers of Chaos warriors. This has led too much personal disgrace, which he discusses with his friend and soldier under his command Frohlich. In fact due to their close relationship, Frohlich may not have gotten his promotion to Sergeant, because he had learnt so much from Vogel.
