Shiver

Origin

Shiver, formerly known as Shake, is a rotund, ever-hungry ghost who, outside of his haunting jobs, also serves as editor to one half of Shiver and Shake.

Creation

The corpulant ghost Shake was created by Arthur Martin and debuted in Cor!! issue 113, starring alongside the cavalier ghost Shiver in the strip Shiver and Shake. A month after Cor!! was cancelled and merged into Buster, Shake reappeared as the editor of new comic Shiver and Shake, now using his former co-star’s moniker, and also starring in a new strip, The Duke’s Spook. The strip continued until Shiver and Shake was merged into Whoopee!

An overweight ghost who constantly obsessed about food, Shake shared an empty house with fellow spook Shiver. Both constantly hoped to have living people move in, but their differing reasons for this desire frequently brought them into conflict with one another – Shiver desired humans to scare, while Shake needed someone to supply the food he craved. Week after week new potential residents would visit the house, only for the clashing ghost’s to unintentionally drive them away. Eventually, however, the house was demolished, and both ghosts moved on to new homes, in Shake’s case the kitchen of an up-market restaurant.

Shake’s tenancy there was apparently short lived. Cheekily appropriating the name of his former housemate, the newly retitled Shiver took up residence in a duke’s mansion, while also ghosting (pun intended) as the editor for new magazine Shiver and Shake, alongside an elephant called (just to confuse matters further) Shake. Initially Shiver and the Duke got along swimingly, but when the Duke hired a new butler, Grimes, the secretly crooked servant and the resident ghost swiftly became unswerving enemies.
