Sohrab

Origin

Sohrab was born out of a tryst between Rostam and the princess of Samangan, Tahmineh. He was given an ornamental necklace or brooch by his mother, a gift from his father to act as an identifier whenever they would happen to meet for the first time. In years to come war breaks out between Iran and Turan, and Sohrab becomes the best warrior in the Turanian army. As the only one willing to fight the Iranian champion, Sohrab engages Rostam in single combat, but the warriors’ names are kept from each other. It is only after he has stabbed his son through the heart that Rostam sees the necklace and is overcome with grief.

In Comics

The longstanding tragedy of Rostam and Sohrab was adapted from the original Persian text for the first issue of Persian-American writer Bruce Bahmani and illustrator Karl Altstaetter‘s Hyperwerks title Rostam: Tales From the Shahnameh in 2005.
