Spotted Dick debuted in issue 1 of Hoot and then joined the pages of The Dandy when the titles merged in 1986.

Spotted Dick (real name Richard) is a spotty boy who spent most of his time on a hospital ward causing havoc for the nurses and doctors and other patients. It was never clear what exactly was wrong with Richard since he was always happy (that is, happily causing trouble) and full of energy. It’s not even clear if his spots are a symptom of his illness, although other patients at the hospital often gave him a wide berth, fearing catching his ‘spottyitis’.
