Origin
Steven is a hybrid between Rose Quartz, a Crystal Gem, and Greg Universe, a human. Tragically though, during Steven’s birth his mother gave up her physical form in order to bring him into the world. Since then, he’s been living with the other gems: Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl. While with them, Steven has been embarking on several gem missions and learning to control his own gem powers.
Creation
Steven Universe first appears as the title cartoon character on Cartoon Network’s “Steven Universe”. He was created by Rebecca Sugar, former writer for another Cartoon Network series: Adventure Time. The show premiered in 2013.
Steven made his first comic appearance in Adventure Time 2013 Spoooktacular #1 – Costume Party; Secret ‘Stache; Halloween Horticulture; Bad Girl Gone Good, and he would later be a main character in his series’ comic titled, “Steven Universe”.
Powers & Abilities
Steven has the several abilities that comes from the gem on his navel. His main ability is summoning his gem weapon; a pink shield that that is practically unbreakable and can increases it’s size. It can also work as an offensive weapon since it can release concussive shock waves.
Pearl even claimed that Steven is way smarter than most of “Earth Schools.” He ends up getting perfect scores in his tests. He is even adaptive.
Steven’s most used ability is the summoning of a protective bubble that surrounds himself as well as the ones he wishes to protect. He’s mastered this power perfectly, and can even use it instinctively.
Steven also has healing spit. It can be used to heal injuries on both humans and gems, such as broken legs or cracked gemstones.
Steven can also create plants with sentient life, making them his bodyguards, but this is an ability he has no control over, making it very risky.
Steven has recently gained the ability to float and control over his speed of descent. Although he had trouble controlling this ability at first; he quickly learned how to use it albeit not perfectly.
Like most gems, Steven has superhuman strength and shape-changing, but he has little to no control over this abilities. His strength appears to come in bursts, and he has difficulties getting back to his real form after shape-changing, but it is shown in later episodes that he has improved control over his shape-shifting being capable of elongating his limbs at will.
Being a human-gem hybrid, Steven has resistance to anti-gem technology, such as gem-destabilizers.
