While coming from a Halloween costume party dressed as a police officer, Samuel Lewis was shot and killed when he attempted to scare off a mugger that was trying to rob two girls in an alleyway.
Immediately after his death the Reaper appeared to Sam and recruited him into the Death Vigil.
