When The Spread had manifested on the surface of the Earth, Graham Sunderland volunteered for the U.S. Army to use his expertise on alternate mitochondrial energy systems on spread-infected humans. One day, he rescued a child, who later turned out to be immune for the infection by The Spread. Graham was opposed to experimenting on the child, but his collegues tranquilized him. Waking up, Graham was horrified to learn that his collegues had experimented on the child anyway. Taking matters into his own hands, Graham released The Spread from its containment cell and was himself infected by The Spread. But he turned out to be immune for it as well. Mentally broken, he became The Preacher.
