Thurid first appeared when he crossed John Carter and Xodar’s way while they were being imprisoned by order of Issus. Thurid attempts to strike down Xodar in disgust for losing his favor with the goddess, but he is stopped by Carter who absolutely knocks him down and ties him up in front of an entire crowd of Black Martians. He re-appeared much later, after the fall of Issus, striking a bargain with the Holy Thern to capture Dejah Thoris, John Carter’s wife, to spite him.
John Carter went on hot pursue after them and along the way, Thurid developed feelings of lust and desire for Dejah and attempted to take her for himself. Carter managed to show up in time and twart him but he was surrounded by Matai Shang and his new allies, the Yellow Martians. When their leader, Salensus Oll declared to make Dejah Thoris his own harem girl, he killed Shang when he protested and made Thurid obey him, reluctantly.
