Owen Backes’ powers first manifested during a car accident. He survived, but his girlfriend didn’t. Afraid and confused, the police started shooting at him until the X-Men arrived in order to help him and offer him a place at the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning, but then a newly reassembled Freedom Force arrived to take him instead.
After a quick battle between the two teams, Owen chose to go with Freedom Force in order to help his country, with everyone unaware that Kade Kilgore intended to take Owen for his own purposes with the use of his relations in the US government.
