Indian boy who drives an elephant, Toomai appeared in the short story Toomai of the Elephants (1893) by Rudyart Kipling, the story was published in St Nicholas Magazine and in the compilation The Jungle Book, in 1937, it was adapted for cinema in the film Elephant Boy, starring Indian-American actor Sabu Dastagir and in the 1973 TV series Elephant Boy starring Esrom Jayasinghe.
In the comic books the actor Sabu and Toomai were combined into Sabu, Elephant Boy, who debuted in Red Circle Comics #4 (April 1945), published by Rural Home and a comic book Sabu: Elephant Boy which had two issues published by Fox Feature Syndicate (June-August 1950).
