Trafalgar Law

Appearance

Trafalgar Law is a thin man with tanned skin. He often wears a yellow and black sweatshirt with his crew’s Jolly Rodger on his chest. His sleeves are always rolled up, revealing tribal tattoos on his arms. He also has the letters D,E,T, and H tattooed on his right fingers, spelling Death without the A. Law says he is from the North Sea, specifically the North Blue. He wears the traditional Northern hat, but his has an animal print on it, along with his jeans. He has light shadows under both of is eyes, and he is always smiling a small smile. The only time he frowns is when people tell him what to do.

History

Trafalgar Law was born in North Blue to wealthy parents in the ‘White City’ of Flevance. He had a younger sister called Lami and the young man studied hard to follow in his Father’s footsteps to become a doctor. Flevance was a prosperous nation mainly due to it being home to Amber Lead, an expensive mineral that was mined there. However, unbeknownst to the people of Flevance, Amber Lead was a poisonous substance, symptoms include white blotches appearing on the skin and drowsiness leading to eventual death. The World Government knew of Amber Lead poisoning but did not notify the citizens of the White City because they saw how much money was being made trading it.

Unfortunately, soon Flevance saw a large majority of their population falling victim to Amber Lead poisoning, including Law’s sister who rapidly entered an advanced stage of the disease. What made things worse was the fact that no doctor could cure or treat the disease, even Law’s father-the best doctor in the country, couldn’t do anything to stop Amber Lead poisoning.

Neighboring countries feared that the disease was contagious (It wasn’t) and started to panic so the World Government deployed Marines to Flevance to massacre the diseased.

Law’s sister was in hospital and refused a Nun’s offer to sneak him along with other children, including his class mates, off the island. Law couldn’t bring himself to leave his sister. The Marines killed the Nun and Law’s classmates, shot Law’s parents and burned down the hospital where Law’s sister was. Law then suffered a mental break down, crying uncontrollably.

But he still managed to evade capture by hiding under a pile of dead bodies the Marines were stacking outside of the country’s walls.

Law entire nature changed dramatically from this tragedy: he became cruel and nihilistic, wanting only to kill as many people as he could before dying from Amber Lead poisoning.

Not too long after this event, Law arrived at Spider Miles, which was a port town the Donquixote pirates were temporarily staying in. He approached Donquixote Doflamingo with bombs strapped to his body and asked him to let him join his crew. He informed the pirate Captain that he only had three years left to live and wanted to inflict as much pain and suffering on others as he could. Doflamingo was curious to know if there were any survivors to which Law told him he didn’t know. Doflamingo’s younger brother, Corazon then entered the room and unceremoniously threw Law out the window where the young boy landed on junk metal. Law survived this and angrily demanded to know why it had happened. He was then told by the family that Corazon hated kids. But was warned that their was a stead fast rule in place which meant you couldn’t harm a member of the family. Law swore his revenge on Corazon anyway and a few days later he stabbed him with a sword. Unfortunately he was seen by Buffalo, but Law managed to bribe him to not tell Doflamingo by buying him ice cream.

Law was paranoid that Buffalo would still tell Doflamingo so he attempted to flee but was caught by Jora and Machvise. They took him to Doflamingo in their dining room where Law noticed that Corazon didn’t die from his stab wound. Doflamingo decided to welcome Law into the family and the Captain was informed by Corazon that his injury was by the hands of an enemy. Law reinforced the fact that he only had three years to live, to which Doflamingo replied by saying his Underworld business would lead him to the Ope Ope ni Mi Devil Fruit, the ‘Ultimate Devil Fruit’ said to be able to cure any disease. He told Law that if he found a way to survive longer than three years, he’d be awarded the position of the Heart seat in the family and become his right hand man in a decade.

For the next few years, Law accompanied the Donquixote pirates on various acts of piracy on multiple islands. During this time he was taught swordsmanship by Diamante, gunnery by Gladius and martial arts by Lao G.

Corazon, Doflamingo’s younger brother, apparently hated kids booted Law out the window and into rubble, remembering this, Law promised to kill him later as revenge. At a meal, Law was informed of the family’s blood-oath, where killing another member would result in torture and death, however Law didn’t care as he went on to sneak up behind Corazon and stab him in the back.

This act did not go unnoticed though, as Law discovered that Buffalo had bared witness to the breaking of the blood-oath, Law did manage to bribe the young member with ice cream so the threat of Buffalo telling a higher executive or Doffy himself was averted.

The potential of getting outed though was far too great for Law to bear, so, out of paranoia he attempted to flee the base, only to get caught by Machvise and Jora who then brought him to the Young Master. Law saw Corazon there, very much alive and feared the silent member had informed his older brother of Law stabbing him. This was not to be though, as Doflamingo revealed his plans of officially welcoming Law into the Donquixote Pirates family. Law underwent training in the fundamental elements of combat- marksmanship, martial arts and swordplay. These taught to him by Gladius, Lao G and Diamante respectively.

It seemed as though all was clear for Law’s path until Rosinante overheard Law telling Buffalo and Baby 5 he had the initial ‘D’ in the middle of his name. Rosinante takes Law out of earshot to hurriedly explain why that name is dangerous, especially to someone like his brother, Doflamingo, therefore giving Law concern to leave. This is the first time Rosinante speaks in the manga, revealing he could do so the whole time but chose not for secrecy-for he his a double agent, working with the Marines to bring his brother down. Additionally, his Devil Fruit, the Nagi Nagi no Mi, allows him to create a sound free zone where nobody outside the zone can himself and Law and sounds outside the zone, are likewise inaudible to the two.

Law refuses to leave the crew and threatens to tell Doflamingo of Corazon’s deception, however he later has a change of heart, morally realizing he should repay Corazon’s decision to not inform Doffy of Law’s attack on him.

Law and Corazon’s journey

An undisclosed time after, Corazon took it upon himself to try find a cure for Law’s Amber Lead syndrome, sailing the seas to various islands in search of doctors capable of supplying a remedy. To Law’s disappointment and Corazon’s dismay, Doctors treated Law reproachfully and refused to treat him, a common reason being they mistakenly thought Amber Lead was contagious. Out of rage, Corazon vandalized their medical facilities before moving on to the next potential would-be helper.

After setting up camp for the night, Corazon broke down in tears while Law slept. Doflamingo’s brother revealed he just wanted Law to get better as he understood the struggle his young companion was going through. Law was actually awake and overheard Corazon’s confession so after this, their relationship became much closer with the two acting akin to older and younger siblings. Following this, Doflamingo contacted Rosinante via Snail Phone with an update for the family to steal the Ope Ope no Mi, the most expensive Devil Fruit. Corazon then tells Law that he plans to retrieve it first, feed it to Law and the latter can cure himself of his affliction.

Unfortunately, Law’s symptoms began to worsen to which Corazon responded by urging Law to stay alive for a few more weeks as their search was hopeful. Law tells Corazon of the World Government’s part to play in the tragedy of his home city and questions if his friend is working with the Marines. Corazon denies it despite informing the Marines of his location and reminds Law that once they steal the Fruit, they will have to watch over their shoulder for both the World Government and the Donquixote Pirates. The pair arrived at Minion Island, where Corazon left Law at a relatively safe spot in town then continued on to take the Ope Ope from a pirate faction who held the Fruit in their possession.

Corazon successfully retrieved the Ope Ope no Mi, with a combination of his resourcefulness and Devil Fruit aided his stealth capabilities. Despite this, he still sustained injuries but was able to get the prize back to Law. Corazon force fed Law the Ope Ope no Mi before collapsing to the ground due to his gunshot wounds taking their toll. Law tries to use his new abilities to heal his companion but Corazon tells him the Ope Ope doesn’t operate like magic.

Corazon gives Law an important letter to deliver to the Marines and the young boy inadvertently hands it over to Vergo who was infiltrating the Marines concurrently with the pair’s personal mission. Law brings Vergo back to Corazon to the latter’s dismay, watching in horror as Vergo reads the letter revealing Corazon’s betrayal to the Donquixote pirates. Vergo viciously beats the pair of them then informs Doflamingo as the Donquixote pirates arrive on the island. While Vergo isn’t paying attention to them, Corazon takes Law and flees which forces Doflamingo to use his Bird Cage technique to prevent them from escaping. Corazon places Law inside a treasure chest and puts up a sound barrier around it so Law cannot be heard. He tells Law he loves him and waits for Doflamingo to approach. Corazon is shot dead by his brother while Law sobs uncontrollably. The Donquixote pirates then leave the island with the treasure chest Law is hiding in but under pressure from Tsuru’s amphibious onslaught, they get preoccupied enough for Law to seize his chance to escape.

Starting a crew

Not far from Minion Island, Swallow Island was where Law recruited the first members of his Heart Pirate crew: Shachi, Penguin and Bepo. Law broke up a scuffle where the two young kids were bullying Bepo the bear Mink. The two ruffians attacked Law but he easily dealt with them due to his prior training in hand to hand combat from Lao G. Bonding over the experience and recognizing Law’s potential, the three of them joined Trafalgar’s pirate crew. Before they all set sail, Law used his Devil Fruit to finally rid himself of the Amber Lead disease.

Sabaody Archipelago

Law and his crew proved strong and fortuitous enough to successfully make their way through the first half of the Grand Line and arrive at Sabaody Archipelago: the last island in Paradise and a convergence point from which pirates can then gain access to the New World.

Personality

Law is a very carefree man before the time-skip, and can be almost always seen smiling. However, he gave another pirate the finger when he called Trafalgar rude, and casually asked another how many Marines he had killed. He also enjoys watching other people fight, as he thinks that other will battle over simple things. But, he is kind to other people, as shown when he offers Jean Bart a place on his crew because of him being an escaped slave. He is also respectful of Eustass Kidd, calling him “Mister Kidd” and helping him to take on a Pacifista. He is also reckless which makes him a more wanted target by the world government when in a fight. He is also blunt when comes to answering questions. When Jimbei asked what would happen to Luffy if he moved around to much when he gets to the island Law simply stated his wounds would open and he would die. He and Bepo are usually seen together and he sometimes has Bepo holding his long Japanese sword called a Nodachi.

Law has displayed a more competitive side about him in the anime where he, along with Kid and Luffy, got into a childish argument about who gets to take down the marines stationed just outside the Human Auctioning House when the three Supernovas came out to confront them. In contrast, he does not seem as eager to reach the New World as the other Supernova crews are, believing that One Piece will still be there regardless while the other crews fight among themselves, and that he needs to steal the throne “properly”.

Sabaody Archipelago Arc

Like the other Supernovas, he was first shown having arrived at the Archipelago with his crew before heading for the New World. He was the final Supernova to be introduced, seen sitting on a crate as X Drake, another Supernova, passed by after having broken up a fight between Urouge and Killer , before he asked how many people Drake had slain (in the anime, he was apparently on the scene moments before Drake appeared, clearly enjoying the fight between Urouge and Killer). Later, Eustass Kid observed him in the Auction House on Grove 1, where he revealed that what he had heard about Law was not very pleasant. Law replied with flipping him off, causing Kid to note that Law was lacking manners. As the auctioning continued, Law only observed in boredom.

After Luffy attacked one of the Nobles , he was seen smiling at the reckless action that his fellow Supernova had performed. A short while after, Law revealed to Luffy that the auction house was surrounded by Marines, since the Archipelago was so close to Marine Headquarters. Later, after Silvers had knocked out the majority of the soldiers standing in the pirates way, he was seen still standing, along with his crew, the Straw-Hats, Kid, Killer, and their crew as well. After the Straw-Hats and Rayleigh prepared to leave the Auction House before the admiral would show up, Kid told Luffy and Law to stay back as he would hold off the Marine grunts, much to both Law and Luffy’s annoyance. Then, the trio demonstrated their powers to hold off the Marines, Law utilizing a field where he replaced a grunt’s head with a cannon ball fired at him.

As the fight continued, Law was busy with switching around the Marine soldiers body parts in order to confuse them and beat them. Later, when the trio had defeated the first wave, Law noted that Luffy had shrunk due to the side-effects of Gear 3rd. After everyone had exited the Auction House, the Marines began a heavier assault on the pirates. At that moment, when Luffy proclaimed that he will be the one to find One Piece , Kid told Law and Luffy that the three would meet each other in the New World , to which Law only smiled. Then, as a bigger Marine grunt tried to attack him, he ordered his bear companion Bepo, to attack them, but he was done fighting. Before he exited the scene, he recruited Jean Bart a former slave into his crew, to which the captain accepted wholeheartedly, although Law told him that half of the thanks would have to go to Luffy. Afterward he and his crew make an escape but came across the Kid Pirates fighting a cyborg clone of Kuma . The cyborg Kuma attacks him with an energy blast but he manages to avoid it before he and Kid prepare to fight him.

Marineford Arc

During the war, Law and his crew were initially present on the Sabaody Archipelago where the broadcast of Ace’s execution was being shown. He was presumably watching the events at aces execution unfold, along with his fellow Supernovas, as he ordered Bepo and Jean Bart to set sail immediately after the broadcast was cut.Towards the end of the battle, as Jinbei and Buggy fled the conflict with a critically injured Luffy, Law emerged from the ocean in his ship, a submarine. With Bepo and Jean Bart at his back, Law told Buggy that he is a doctor, and ordered him to hand over Luffy for medical treatment. He claimed that although Straw Hat may become an enemy of his in the future, Law would not allow that destiny to go unfulfilled by letting him die now.

As the war gets more intense, Law continues to tell Buggy to drop Luffy and Jinbei to his ship. Just as Buggy is about to, he is shot through his shoulder by Kizaru and throws them at Law’s ship as he flees. As Jean Bart catches them he orders his crew to dive, but as soon as they’re leaving, Kizaru shows up and tries to capture them. Luckily the distraction of Coby and the Red-Haired pirates allowed them to leave the battle ground. But before his vessel could fully submerge, Buggy, who was convinced by Shanks to help return his hat back to Luffy , threw Luffy’s signature hat at the submarines opening hatch right before Law sealed it off, and was promptly caught by Law. He then commenced to supervising Luffy and Jinbei’s medical treatment while putting the Straw Hat on the side table, as the submarine is evading Aokiji’s ice attacks and Kizaru’s lasers.

Powers and Abilities

Law is a fearsome pirate who, along with most of his crew, proved resistant to Rayleigh’s burst of Haki that took out almost everyone in the Auction house. He has earned the nickname “Surgeon of Death” due to his medical prowess in addition to his formidable combat abilities.

‘Law is a skilled swordsman, and has knowledge in medical fields due to his study at medical school. He’s eaten the Op-Op Devil Fruit transforming him into a free modify human. Allowing him to create a spherical territory, in which he can disassemble, reform, and telekinetically control matter.

Law's operating room
Law’s operating room

He can also cause other people to switch places in his field, as shown when he puts a Marine in the path of a cannonball shot at Bepo. Law can even teleport himself around the space he has opened up at will, even being able to swap out with something else exchanging places. Anything within his area space of influence is his to control to a tee, Law often uses his sword as a makeshift scalpel to cleave people or the surroundings apart even from afar, while people being affected by this power are normally left unharmed and can easily be brought back together if their split parts have been properly realigned, however his ‘Radio knife’ technique severs appendages and leaves them unable to be reattached for several minutes. Furthermore, what is perhaps Law’s most powerful attack is his ‘Gamma Knife.’ A gamma Knife is a form of radio surgery to treat brain tumors, however Law uses it in an offensive manner: he gathers energy and shapes it into a short blade which he then plunges into his enemies internal organs for to inflict fatal damage (Doflamingo would have died if not for his ability to stitch his organs back together)- The damages to the terrain within it are permanently altered and remain so long after the power has been diffused. The circles which form in his hands acts as an indicator to when he is activating his ROOM space as shown when he and Kid were fighting the Pacifista, or when Law fought against Smoker and his marines at Punk Hazard. While his territory is active law can accomplish other feats as well, including scanning the area similar to an X-ray, swap people’s minds and bodies completely and indefinitely until canceled out – but still needing the proper proximity to and between hosts to reverse his doings, even boasting attacks and abilities operating without the necessity of his ROOM. Such as the removal of hearts from individual bodies converting them into cubic containers making them vulnerable to harm; a critical skill as any unprotected vital organ (E.I. the human heart) can cause extreme pain when tampered with or instant death if severely damaged. The second is a static shock like burst of energy applied when both hands are pressed together against an adversary knocking them out near instantly. He as the usual Devil Fruit users weakness of being unable to swim. Besides the standard faults, his DF power requires a lot of concentration and focus on his part to “operate” a draw back to his power is the fact that constant use of the Room Field drains his stamina with each conjuring, this makes both him and the effectiveness of the space’s influence weaker with every usage. Law has little patience for people he sees as small minded; when Luffy cared more about the fact that Law had a talking bear as a crew mate then the thousands of Marines outside, he became angry, however he, like most people Luffy is affiliated with is drawn to Luffy and respects him after the Dressrosa arc.

Devil Fruit Awakening

Law has awakened his Devil Fruit, granting him more potent techniques. This new ability is called ‘Kroom/Kuromu’ where he coats his blade in his Room’s energy, enabling it to phase through a person and operate on them internally. Law used ‘Shock Wille’ on Big Mom, creating shockwaves from within her body and damaging her more than anyone shown thus far in the series.

Swordsmanship

Law has demonstrated a high level of proficiency in sword play, having been trained since the age of 10 by the Donquixote’s family executive and master swordsman, Diamante.

No Caption Provided

He has been skilled enough to match the formidable Marine Vice Admiral Smoker in a sword to jitte fight, a battle which Law eventually won.

Furthermore he has been adept enough to briefly hold his own against Doflamingo on top of the Warlord’s plaza. Doflamingo attacked Law several times with his strings with unrelenting speed and precision, yet Law was skilled enough to parry and block his attacks. At one point Law even managed to land ‘Injection Shot’ on the Warlord, drawing blood from his stomach. Law’s sword, Kikoku is his preferred weapon of choice, it is a cursed sword in One Piece and is a larger version of the Japanese sword type, nodachi.

Marksmanship

Law has been shown to have training in marksmanship from the Donquixote’s top fire arms specialist, Gladius, since he was 10 years old:

However he has not been seen wielding a gun in adulthood as his weapon of choice is his sword.

Unarmed combat

The young supernova has been extensively trained by the Donquixote family’s best martial artist, Lao G since the age of 10.

No Caption Provided

His hand to hand skill was good enough to briefly go blow for blow against Doflamingo on top the palace plaza.

Super Strength

Law has vast superhuman strength easily exceeding the capacity to lift 100 tons. He has been strong enough to block and parry attacks from Smoker, who is strong enough to destroy boulders and overpower Monkey D. Luffy before the two year time-skip.

He has also casually punched through rock, punched Doflamingo hard enough to create shock waves as well as physically hold his own for a short time against the Warlord on top of the plaza in Dressrosa.

Law can also augment his striking power considerably with Busohoku Haki coating his limbs.

Super Speed

Trafalgar’s perceptions, combat speed and travel speed (in short bursts) are high hypersonic based on his feats. He has calmly reacted to a falling meteorite from near point blank range and cut it in half and it should be noted these meteors have a faster velocity compared to real life, as Issho drags them down with gravity for attacks in combat.

No Caption Provided

He has held his own for short periods against the high hypersonic doflamingo who has been fast enough to out speed Luffy using Gear 2nd as well as attack fast enough for his strings to reach from island to island in seconds. Moreover Law matched then defeated Smoker on Punk Hazard after the time-skip. before the time-skip, Smoker was fast enough to outmaneuver Gear 2nd Luffy, after two years he undoubtedly got much faster as every major One Piece character gained significant boosts to their stats after the two year time-skip.

It should also be noted that in the anime, Law was able to block a barrage of bullet strings from Doflamingo whereas Luffy had been previously hit with them, however Luffy is still consistently faster than Law but the difference in combat speed between the two is minimal.

In the Supernova fight against Kaido and Big Mom on the Onigashima giant skull, Law was able to perceive and react to Kaido’s speedblitz against Luffy. The former Warlord teleported Luffy out of the way before Straw Hat got struck by Kaido’s club again:

Law’s overall combat speed is enhanced when he uses kenbunshoku haki.

Endurance/ durability

Trafalgar Law has an extremely high level of durability and endurance, a typical trait among the eleven supernovas and other pirates of his caliber. Law has withstood multiple Busoshuku Haki augmented blows from the class 100, Vergo then recovered from his injuries in mere minutes to stand against the Vice Admiral for the last time and cut him, the SAD factory and the surrounding mountain range in half with one swift sword slash. Law has also endured Admiral Fujitora’s gravity pressing down on him (which was at a pressure strong enough to crumble a boulder) and later escape with no lasting damage, he has blocked Doflmaingo’s strings (sharp enough to slice meteors into chunks) with his Color of Arms Haki.

Law blocking Doflamingo's strings
Law blocking Doflamingo’s strings

Furthermore after receiving a beating from Doflamingo on the bridge to Dressrosa and being thrown down to the ground at high speeds from the sky and shot at multiple times, he was not only still alive but able to recover quickly well enough to join Luffy in his fight against Doflamingo in mere hours. Trafalgar was still alive after Doflamingo pierced his body at several points with his ‘Fullbright attack’ and he hds still been in fighting condition after reattaching his arm after it had been severed by Doflamingo’s strings, the tyrant King of Dressrosa resorts to lethal attack methods right off the bat in the battles he is in, so this is even more of a testament to Law’s durability and endurance.

What is perhaps most note worthy about these feats, is the fact that Law could still effectively activate ‘Room’ despite fatigue and bodily damage reducing his ability to use his Devil Fruit.
