Ugly Man was hired by Dead Hand Legendre to kill the Hangman. He had failed in doing so a number of times and was arrested. He was freed and given a second chance. While on a roof, he was killed by a Hangman impersonator using a noose, a fact that amazed the real Hangman as he’d thought the feat impossible. While examining the corpse, Hangman found that he was able to communicate with the Ugly Man’s spirit and learned that all people killed by hanging become a part of him. However, he was later resurrected by Legendre to further serve him.
