Valérian

In comics

Valerian is the creation of Jean-Claude Mézières and Pierre Christin, first appearing in Pilote in 1967. In the year 2720, Valerian is an agent of the Spatio-Temporal Service, protecting the planets of the Terran Empire from various threats created through time-travel. He meets Laureline in 1000 A.D. and takes her back to his own time, where she joins him on missions for the Spatio-Temporal Service. The two appear together in both Pilote and their own title, Valérian et Laureline.

Other media

From 2007-2008, Valérian et Laureline (a.k.a. Time Jam: Valerian and Laureline) aired in France. While the French-Japanese production only lasted one season, it did last for forty episodes. The animated series was not completely faithful to its source material, but characters, plot, and setting from the comics are evident throughout.

In 2017, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets opened in American theaters. The film, directed by Luc Bessan (The Fifth Element), stars Dane DeHaan as Major Valerian, as well as Cara Delevingne as Sergeant Laureline. The movie grossed $226 million, and had an estimated budget of $177.20 million. Clive Owen, Rihanna, and Ethan Hawke also starred.
