Walter Barrett

Origin

Walter Barrett acquired custody of the daughter he never met following the tragic death of her mother. He was ashamed of his daughter’s mutant nature and demanded she not use her mutant abilities following her move from Venezuela to the United States. Barrett never afforded time for his daughter and instead his butler Derek Newton tended to her needs. When her father did not even take notice of her birthday, Sofia stormed one of his businesses and began to create an intense tornado within the complex, causing intense damage.

Creation

Walter Barret was created by Christina Weir, Nunzio DeFilippis and Keron Grant and first appeared in New Mutants Vol.2 issue 1(2003).

Major Story Arcs

Mutant Daugther

After Sofia was arrested, Barrett refused to bail her out to teach her a lesson. When Moonstar heard of Sofia’s arrest on television, she recruited her to join the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning. Refusing due to the bad press it would bring, Barrett later gave in after Moonstar threatened to make the bad press even worse.

Derek would often try to visit Sofia while she attended the school and attempted to bring her father with him several times. Barrett has continued to show a lack of interest, even fleeing the scene while she was attacked by the mutant murdering team the Reavers. Barrett’s cowardice caused Derek to leave his job and decided to move closer to the school so he could visit Sofia.

Rehire the Help

When Barrett wanted to rehire Derek, he attended Parents Week at the Xavier Institute in an attempt to scheme his hired help back into service. When Sofia learned of the betrayal, her powers and her temper nearly went out of control and she had to be forcibly calmed by the telepathic mutant Emma Frost.

The two have not seen each other since. Sofia is currently known as the superheroine Renascence.
