The story of the Mighty Ducks begins in a parallel universe, on a planet inhabited entirely by ducks. On Puckworld, hockey is a way of life. Hundreds of years ago, the planet was saved from a race of alien overlords called the Saurians by Drake Ducaine, a legendary hockey player, who invented a goalie mask that could see through the enemy’s invisible shields. Wildwing didn’t believe in the legends, but his little brother Nosedive did. Wildwing would spend his days out on the ice with his best friend Canard, honing his skills as a goalie.

A few days later, the last surviving Saurian overlord, Dragaunus, attacked Puckworld and enslaved its population. During this time, Wildwing became separated from his friend Canard, but when he showed up again, he announced he had joined the military and was in the resistance. He wanted Wildwing to join his team to take out Dragaunus, but Wildwing didn’t believe it was possible…until Canard showed him the Mask. Nosedive, who had always believed the legends, was very excited to see it, but Canard said “Beat it, kid. Before you get us all into trouble.” Wildwing stood up for Nosedive, saying “No. If you want me, then my brother’s part of the deal.” Canard consented to the terms, as long as Wildwing was the one who looked out for Nosedive.

After recruiting Wildwing and Nosedive, Canard also added Mallory, Duke, Tanya and Grin to the team, and they infiltrated Dragaunus’s headquarters. Canard assigned each team member a task, and Wildwing said “Canard, these guys all have special skills, but what am I doing here?” Canard explained that Wildwing’s job was to draw Dragaunus out of his command chamber. When Wildwing asked why him, Canard said “Because you’re the best goalie I know. You’ll be able to take anything Dragaunus can throw at you.”

“Take it. You’re team captain now.”

The ducks’ mission was a success, and Dragaunus’s headquarters was destroyed. But the Saurians escaped through a dimensional gateway, and attacked the team’s ship with what Tanya described as “an electromagnetic worm.” Knowing that the worm would swallow the ship unless it consumed some sort of matter, Canard opened the door and allowed the worm to grab him, handing Wildwing the Mask first. Initially, Wildwing refused, but soon Canard was being sucked out of the ship as Wildwing and Grin desperately tried to hold onto him. Eventually, Canard let go and said “Take it. You’re team captain now.” And he disappeared into dimensional limbo.

On Earth:

Once the ducks followed Dragaunus to the other end of the gateway, they arrived in Anaheim, California. Wildwing just kept the mask in his pouch for a while, refusing to fully accept the role of leader, despite Canard’s wishes. The ducks, while needing a way to stay sharp until they could find Dragaunus, met Phil Palmfeather, a sports agent/manager who was looking for a new hockey team to represent. He employed the ducks, and they became the official team, The Mighty Ducks. Their contract also allowed them to use the location under the Anaheim Pond as their headquarters.

Wildwing ordered Tanya to build a master computer to aid their search for Dragaunus, while the rest of the team searched in their new vehicle, the Migrator. On this outing, the ducks discovered they were needed to fight crime all over the city, and became regular vigilantes. Once they finally did find Dragaunus and engaged in battle with him on the Saurian’s ship, called the Raptor, Wildwing still wasn’t confident enough to put on the mask. It wasn’t until Dragaunus taunted him by saying that Canard was lost for all eternity along with the mask, that Wildwing finally pulled it out of his pouch and put it on. Now that he could see through Dragaunus’s invisible shield, he engaged in hand-to-hand combat with him. Unfortunately, before the fight could escalate, Tanya and Grin blew up the Raptor’s engines, and the team had to abandon the ship or go down with it.

Dragaunus’s ship was equipped with a cloaking device, and the Mighty Ducks didn’t have enough fuel to keep pursuing them. But Duke said “We’ll find them again. Because now, we have a leader.”

As team captain:

Like most cartoon character team leaders in 90’s cartoons, Wildwing is pretty boring. He rarely utters any funny or memorable lines. He just remains stoic and serious, giving orders to the team but never abusing his power. He always puts the team’s safety first, even at the expense of finally capturing Dragaunus.

Quotes:

Wildwing: “Besides, I’ve heard all the stories about Drake Ducaine’s mask, Dive. They’re just legends.”
Nosedive: “Legends? Wake up and smell yourself, man! You’re talking about the most totally righteous duck who ever quacked, flat-out!”
Wildwing: “Relax, baby brother. The Saurian empire vanished centuries ago.”

Wildwing: “Canard, these guys all have special skills, but what am I doing here?”
Canard: “You’re going to draw Dragaunus out, so we can jump him.”
Wildwing: “Why me?!”
Canard: “Because you’re the best goalie I know. You’ll be able to take anything Dragaunus can throw at you.”
Wildwing: “Did I mention I’m half chicken?”

*talking to himself* “You’re the bait, old pal. You’re the decoy. *chuckle* Remind me to do YOU a favor sometime, Canard. Dragaunus’s command center must have guards up the kazoo. Aw, man, I hate being right!”

“Now THIS is a weird way to go; eaten by a surf-and-turf dinner!”

Wildwing: “This isn’t going the way I planned.”
Nosedive:
“You actually had a plan?”
Wildwing: “Yeah. But I kinda hoped to stick around to see the end of it.”

Daddy-O Cool: “Oh, I used to be a conformist like you.”
Wildwing: “We’re alien ducks. How nonconformist can you get?”

Klegghorn: “For crying out loud, what did you do to get these lizards so steamed?!”
Wildwing: “Oh, well it seems we got in the way of their mad plan to conquer the universe.”

Duke: “I’d say someone just blew the vault in that bank.”
Wildwing: “And I suppose YOU want us to stop them.”

*after Grin tosses several bikers into a dumpster*
“That’s where trash like you belongs.”

Tanya: “You need anything else blown up?”
Wildwing: “As a matter of fact, yeah! Give me a puck!”

Wildwing: “Alright, Daddy-O. This is the finish line.”
Daddy-O Cool: “You pelicans won’t stop me!”
Wildwing: “That’s DUCKS!!!” *fires explosive puck*

“Captured three times in one episode. That’s got to be a record.”
