Babcock quickly finds himself to be completely unable to complete his preliminary sketches. Ordered to finish the drawings or find himself without work, Babcock steals the work of another architect in desperation. His lies are not believed and, sinking into madness, he sacrifices his young niece Maddie Babcock in an effort to stir creative energies. Her death immediately allows him to begin creating again, but he soon grows to hate and fear his dark inspirations. Hoping to prevent the building of this House, he writes a letter to the head builder Ed Long, but before it can be sent he is struck by a carriage in the streets, and dies.
