Manny Humphires was convicted after torching his own apartment building to get back at his landlord for a perceived slight. The fire killed three and Manny was sent to a mental institusion in Alaksa. He escaped jail however and was soon wandering the Alaskaian wilds.
Humphries stumbled into the lab of Dr. Richard Bare a geneticist doing experiments on Arctic animals. Dr. Bare prompted put Humphries through an experimental augmentation process that turned the convict into a beastman. The newly created hybrid then tore the Doctor apart and escaped. In his flight he ran into the Comet who was investigating another lab, the two fought inconclusively until the Wolf fled the scene.
