Ernest ‘Wolfie’ Smith made his debut in issue one of the shortlived UK comic, Tornado, which ran for just 22 issues. He was however one of the most popular strips in the comic and so successfully made the jump into 2000AD when Tornado merged with it. The strip was written by British comics stalwart, Tom Tully.
Wolfie was a teenager who had ESP – extra sensory perception. As such he had photographic memory, was able to plant thoughts into others’ minds, could move objects with his mind and had some precognitive abilities. Wolfie was a typical cheeky teenager, a bit of an outsider without much thought about the future. In the run of the strip he worked in cafes and circuses.
The story was fairly gentle until it moved into 2000AD where it became quite dark, perhaps reflecting that comic’s ouevre.
