Ita was the eldest daughter of Tugg, chief of the prehistoric Horse Tribe. Ita was considered less attractive than her younger sister, Embra, and Chief Tugg found it difficult to marry her off. When young Anthro of the Bear People tried to court Embra, Chief Tugg offered him Ita’s hand instead. However, Anthro refused and fled, angering Chief Tugg.
Later, Chief Tugg and Anthro’s father, Chief Ne-Ahn of the Bear Tribe, came up with a plan to consolidate their tribes. Tugg would hold a contest amongst the greatest warriors for Ita’s hand, plus three horses. Many of the Bear Tribe entered the contest, though most for the horses than for Ita. Grog, son of Org, won the contest, and won Ita’s hand in marriage. After the Bear Tribe’s medicine man performed a wedding ceremony, Grog carried Ita off to his hut, for them to start their lives together.
