Ant-Man (Lang)

Origin

No Caption Provided

Scott Lang was a down-on-his-luck electronics expert, who turned to burglary as a means of supporting his family. Scott proved to be a poor criminal and was arrested during a botched robbery. He was sent to prison, but received an early parole for good behavior.

After his release from jail, he was hired by Stark International to resume his work in electronics. Although Scott’s life seemed to be improving, he was devastated to learn that his daughter Cassie had been diagnosed with a serious heart condition. Scott desperately wanted to save Cassie’s life, and sought the aid of the brilliant micro surgeon Dr. Erica Sondheim. Unfortunately, Dr. Sondheim was being held prisoner by the mutated villain Darren Cross. To rescue Sondheim, Scott stole Hank Pym‘s old Ant-Man equipment. Taking the Ant-Man mantle, Scott used his new found power to defeat Cross and rescue the doctor.

Scott was prepared to return to prison for his crimes, but Hank Pym was impressed by his heroics and saw Scott’s potential as a hero. Dr. Pym allowed Scott to continue using the Ant-Man equipment and identity. More importantly (at least to Scott), Dr. Sondheim was able to successfully treat Cassie’s heart condition.

Creation

Scott Lang was created by David Michelinie and John Byrne and first appeared in a cameo in The Avengers issue 181 (3/1979). Michelinie and Byrne were also the creative team for the debut and origin of Lang as the second Ant-Man one month later in Marvel Premiere issue 47 (4/1979).

Character Evolution

No Caption Provided

First introduced as a struggling father and thief, Scott was granted the Ant-Man armor and powers and became the second Ant-Man with Hank Pym’s blessing. Whilst initially not belonging to a team, instead occasionally helping out other heroes, he found a home as Reed Richard’s replacement in the Fantastic Four and then the Heroes for Hire. After this, he found himself as a an occasional team up partner again, but after losing custody of his daughter, Cassie, he joined the Avengers, the premier super hero team.

However, Scott was a victim of the Scarlet Witch’s madness when he was caught in the re-animated Jack of Heart’s explosion, which she caused, this was the last straw in the Avengers, and the team disbanded. After his death, his daughter continued his legacy becoming the hero Stature. Recently, Scott was displaced in time, the moment right before he died, by Cassie and the Young Avengers.

Ever since, Scott has been dealing with the real world problems of being dead: his credit and resume have unexplainable gaps, which has ruined his future employment. This has cast him in the role of a lovable sad-sack constantly on the verge of his life falling apart. And yet, still a trusted member of the Avengers and Fantastic Four.

Major Story Arcs

Becoming a Hero

Scott divided his time between his roles as scientist, father, and superhero. He worked alongside several other heroes and frequently clashed with the mercenary trainer called Taskmaster. He fought the Taskmaster alongside the Avengers on three separate occasions and earned their respect as well as part-time membership with the team. When Baron Helmut Zemo‘s Masters of Evil took control of Avengers Mansion, Scott helped the Avengers retake their headquarters.

Fantastic Four

Scott was later hired by the Fantastic Four as an electronics expert after Mr. Fantastic‘s apparent demise. Scott was soon inducted into the Fantastic Four, and helped the team during numerous adventures. Scott proved himself against a variety of foes and gained new confidence after successfully resisting possession by the insectoid Grottu. Following Mr. Fantastic’s return from apparent death, Scott left the Fantastic Four as full-time member, but left with a smile on his face and a few new good friends.

Around this time, he teamed up with War Machine, Thunderstrike and She-Hulk to thwart Loki. After defeating the villain, Scott suggested that the heroes stay together and form a team similar to the Avengers, but none of them were interested.

Heroes for Hire

No Caption ProvidedNo Caption Provided

After Scott’s adventures with the Fantastic Four, he joined the newest incarnation of the Heroes for Hire team set up by Iron Fist and Jim Hammond. Living with Cassie in the teams HQ, Scott had many adventures and battles with famous other Superhumans (such as the Thunderbolts and the Master Of The World) making him a trusted sight in the superhero community. He was given Yellowjackets old bio sting gauntlets and eventually gained a loyal steed in Ignatz, a small flying Deviant who was able to communicate with Scott via the Ant-Man helmet. The group eventually disbanded due to a change of management and several new resultant policies.

Sometime after the group disbanded Scott began dating former superhero Jessica Jones, they were happily together for some time. It ended after Jessica told Scott that she was pregnant with Luke Cage’s child, the former teammate of Scott when he was part of the Heroes for Hire team. After this, Scott would go on to provide backup to both the Avengers and the Fantastic Four, assisting both super groups whenever his skills proved necessary. All this time he also stayed a loving and caring parent to his daughter Cassie.

Joining the Avengers

Scott Lang (Ant-Man)Scott Lang (Ant-Man)

Scott was subsequently invited to join the Avengers full-time, a role he accepted after losing custody of his daughter Cassie to his ex-wife. While with the Avengers, Scott often butted heads with fellow newcomer Jack of Hearts. After some time they started to understand each other more. It turned out that Jack would be consumed by his own powers, unless he would go into a holding cell to siphon off the overpowering energies building up inside him. After Scott came to know these problems, they both got more and more respect for each other. And despite the animosity they first had, Jack even helped Scott during one of his darkest hours. Scott’s daughter Cassie was abducted by an insane man, who saw his own dead daughter in Cassie and wanted to kill her for that reason.

Scott and Jack of Hearts both came to the rescue of his daughter. Only problem was that Jack had been away from his holding cell for too long and the energies inside him where building up to dangerous levels. As soon as Cassie was safe, Jack grabbed the insane man, said goodbye to Scott, seeing him as a true friend and flew of into outer space. There Jack seemingly exploded and ceased to exist. Scott knew that he had lost a friend who sacrificed himself to save that which Scott loved most in life, his daughter.

Death and Legacy

Jack of Hearts would soon reappear floating outside of Avengers Mansion. He was clearly in distress and appeared to be in a catatonic state, crackling with uncontrolled energy. Unknown to the Avengers at the time, Jack was under the control of the now insane Scarlet Witch, who intended on using him as a weapon against her former comrades. As Scott rushed out of the mansion to confront Jack, the undead Jack of Hearts exploded, and Scott was incinerated by a tremendous discharge of energy. Scott’s death proved to be the first of a series of tragic occurrences that brought about Avengers Disassembled.

A commemorative statue for Scott was placed in the gardens of the Avengers Mansion. Scott Lang’s legacy is currently kept alive by his daughter, Cassie, as the costumed hero Stature. Cassie was extremely effected by her Father’s death and her costume is based on her Father’s. Scott was also seen in the underworld when Hercules visited it. His helmet fell into the possession of Amadeus Cho, who, with Cassie’s blessing, choose to wear it and harness it’s insect controlling abilities.

During the search for the Scarlet Witch, the Young Avengers, Iron Lad and the amnesiac Wanda, time travel to the day Wanda brought back Jack of Hearts and killed Scott in order to see if the present day Wanda’s memory will be restored. Whilst there, they run into the alive Scott, moments before his death. Cassie immediately runs to him and hugs him, confused as to why she’s there, and in a costume, Cassie tells him that they’re dressing up for Halloween and taking them on a tour of the mansion. She begins to introduce the members to him, but at that moment, Jack of Hearts returns. However, just in time, Iron Lad returns them to the present day, with Scott. However, unknown as to why, Scott Lang is still dead in the present, but, moments later, the Scarlet Witch returns and remembers everything. Later, whilst fighting the empowered Victor Von Doom, Scott shrinks down and approaches Doom, backed by a swarm of flying ants. Doom attacks back; Cassie – fearing her father is again dead- grows to Doom’s size and punches him. Doom retaliates with an energy blast which deals a fatal blow to Cassie. She later dies from her injuries in Scott’s arms.

Future Foundation

When the Fantastic Four decided to go a road trip through space and time, Scott was recruited along with She Hulk, Medusa, and Miss Thing to make up a temporary replacement staff for the Future Foundation.

It is evident that Scott is still mourning the loss of his daughter and as such wishes Doom dead. Eventually, Scott devises a plan to defeat Doctor Doom for good and exact vengeance for what he did to Cassie.

Utilizing a new, more comprehensive way of manipulating Pym Particles, Scott nearly kills Doom, but chooses to spare his life, reasoning that the humiliation would be worse than death.

Original Sin

Following the murder of the Watcher, Scott is chosen alongside Black Panther, the Winter Soldier, Gamora, Emma Frost, the Punisher, and Doctor Strange as one of the potential candidates to replace the original Nick Fury in his role as the defender of Earth. He and the others help defeat Fury after he is revealed to be the Watcher’s true murderer.

Return of Scott’s Daughter

When Scott Lang was relieved from his duties as leader of the Future Foundation after the return of the Fantastic Four, he decided to take it easy for some time. He was still coping and struggling with the death of his daughter Cassie. It was however then that Scott got the shock of a lifetime. His daughter Cassie stood in front of his door, alive and well. It turned out that, during the events of AXIS, an inversion spell cast during a battle with Red Onslaught had caused Doctor Doom to adopt a new, decidedly more heroic personality. Seeking to make up for the horrible things he had done during his life, Doom temporarily formed a new team of Avengers to capture and harness the power of the Scarlet Witch, who has been turned evil by the inversion. Realizing that he only had enough power to make one lasting change, Doom nobly choose to use it to resurrect Cassie, whose death he had deeply regretted.

Ant-Man in Miami

No Caption ProvidedNo Caption Provided

While Scott and Peggy Rae were overwhelmed with joy and disbelieve of the return of their daughter, Scott’s ex-wife took a more aggressive stance towards Scott and took Cassie away from New York City to live in Miami. She had enough of the super-heroics of her daughter and her ex-husband, which already caused enough grief over the years. Scott was not able to convince his ex-wife to remain in New York, even though he had just gotten a job at Stark International. Desperately wanting to be with Cassie, Scott turned down the job and followed Cassie and Peggy (unbeknownst to her) to Miami.

There, Scott tried to get funds for his own private detective agency at a bank. At first, the bank refused to fund his agency. This all changed when Scott helped save the bank by destroying a runaway WWII robot (whose rampage was kind of caused by Lang himself). With the money Scott got from the bank, he started his own security firm, soon recruiting ex-villains Grizzly and Machinesmith.

The move to Miami was supposed to be about getting Cassie, now powerless, away from the superhero lifestyle, but Scott finds himself up to his ears in supervillains after Power Broker debuted a share economy app called Hench, that made hiring henchman and mercenaries easier than ever.

Hench appHench app
Hench app

The Hench app also allowed users to gain superpowers so that they may work with supervillains. Cassie, sad over losing her powers and just mad in general at her father, saw it as an opportunity to become a superhuman adventurer again. They outfitted her with Pym particles and an insect communicating helmet so she could become Stinger. Her first gig on the app involved Cross Technological, who secretly planned to use her as bait to trap Scott.

Scott put together a big crew to break in and get her back. The members included his Security Solution employees: Grizzly and Machinesmith, his current romantic interest, Beetle, his ex-girlfriend pop star turned reality star, Darla Deering, his unpaid intern, Raz, and Hench app users: Magician, Hijacker, Whirlwind, and The Voice.

They were able to free Cassie and steal some some of Cross’ inventions on the side. Unfortunately, Darla’s TV producers had her followed 24/7 by surveillance drones for her reality show. They caught everything, editing it to blame Scott. Scott got himself thrown in prison to save everyone else until his old Future Foundation teammate and lawyer , She-Hulk, could get him out.

Secret Empire

During Hydra’s takeover of America thanks to a brainwashed Captain America, Scott was a member of the Underground, a group of resistance heroes led by Hawkeye and Black Widow. He was the member with the worst leverage though. Hydra kidnapped his daughter, Cassie, and forced him to act as a mole. He informed Hydra when Stark was able to reassemble the Cosmic Cube. He came clean to his teammates, but it was already too late. Despite all of this, his use of the Pym particles were essential in stopping Hydra. Racked with shame and guilt, Scott jumped on the Guardians of the Galaxy ship to get away from all the Earthbound heroes he failed.

Joining Nova CorpsJoining Nova Corps
Joining Nova Corps

Scott had barely made it to space when Scott Adsit, former SHIELD agent turned Nova Corpsman, looked to them for help. The Nova Corps had recently been reformed, and Adsit was afraid that a few bad apples have been stealing money and other resources. They successfully helped Adsit investigate this, and it wasn’t too long after that the Guardians continued on their original mission, locating the Infinity Gems.

However, Scott had other ideas. He wanted to get home to for Cassie’s birthday, and Nova Corps helped him reach out to Nadia van Dyne, the new Wasp, who could help Scott teleport home. She was not happy to do so.

Trapped in the Microverse with Nadia

Scott’s successful teleportation back to Earth required him to hit a very small window at microscopic size or else he could end up anywhere on the planet. He missed it much to the chagrin of Nadia, who now had to follow his Pym particle trail. She locates him somewhere in the Microverse. It only took her two minutes, but time being wonky in the Microverse, Scott was actually there for a few weeks. They were confronted by Thetacorians, sentient light waves. They had every color of the spectrum except red. The missing red was causing them to die, and they blamed Scott and Nadia for this due to their uniforms being predominantly that same color. The two decide to stick around and investigate.

Stuck in the MicroverseStuck in the Microverse
Stuck in the Microverse

They find an odd looking Thetacorian who is entirely red. It appears to be feeding on the other Thetacorians’ red color, killing them in the process. Scott and Nadia are able to defeat him, but Nadia is left blind after her eyes are transformed red. Scott does his best to shrink down and try to “re-wire” her eyes, but unbeknownst to either of them, blind Nadia is stepping on an even smaller civilization. One of that civilization’s smartest scientists shrinks Nadia down (with Scott still in her eye) to confront her.

While Nadia is trapped in a status bubble, still blind and without her gear, Scott tries to reach out to their captor using the universal translator in Nadia’s helmet. This proves difficult at first because Scott is stuck at ant-size relative to their captors with his Pym particles depleted. As soon as he can make contact, the curious scientist is ecstatic. He helps Scott and Nadia collect their gear and escape, however, being small for this long starts affecting their physiology, taking on the characteristics of quantum particles. Luckily, they were able to use those characteristics to their advantage to escape the Microverse. All that was left to do was untangle themselves from each other, an easy task now that they had access to Nadia’s lab.

Frost Giants

When Malekith leads an army made up of soldiers from all the different realms to take Midgard, Freya rallies the heroes of Earth to fight back. The Frost Giants are able to take over Florida, so Freya enlists Lang to lead a group of Giant Men (Raz Malhotra, the new Goliath, and Atlas) into enemy territory and defeat Ymir, the father of Frost Giants. Lang was already heading to Miami to save Cassie so he agreed.

It turns out Moonstone had enslaved a number of Florida women into handmaidens so she could torture and take advantage of Ymir. They have been carving pieces off his frozen body to create new Frost Giants in exchange for being left alone in the new world order. Just then one of the handmaidens reveals herself to be Cassie in her Stinger gear ready to liberate the rest of the slaves.

Together, they convince Moonstone to end her madness, but as they discus how to finish off Ymir, Raz makes an executive decision to let him go. He was a victim of Moonstone and left the realm without argument.

The Bug Lords

Lang returned to Florida to be near his daughter. His ex-wife was now supportive of her superhero career path, and Lang wanted to be there to help mentor her. He was back to being a one-man security firm hired to use his bug communicating abilities to solve the mysterious death of a whole hive of bees that were being observed.

He found The Swarm, who was forced into working for bug super-soldier, Macrothrax. Swarm created 3 other soldiers that were humanoids made of bugs: Tusk, Thread, and Vespa, as well as using Ant-Man’s tech to commune with the primordia Bug Lords. To stop them from taking over the world, Lang has to call in help from his daughter. They chase Macrothrax to the Savage Land, where Lang was able to combine the might of all the Savage Land insects to best the Bug-Lords.

Zayn recruiting Scott

Scott was hired by the Avengers to escort the merged body of Hank Pym and Ultron to the microverse. Pym-Ultron was kept in a vibranium casket locked with Asgardian magic. Along with Cassie, the two first took the casket to New York, where Hank Pym’s lab was. It had technology that would allow for them to send the casket to the microverse with more accuracy than the shrinking tech on their persons.

Unfortunately, Pym-Ultron had learned how to use the ant-communicators as radios and had been planning with The Black Ant a means of escape. The Black Ant was to use Hank Pym’s old Aging Ray on the vibranium to degrade it. The mix of temporal energy, Asgardian magic, and vibranium’s unique sonic frequency caused the casket to be lost in the timestream. As The Black Ant attempts an escape, Scott and his daughter used their new ability to speak to all bug life to trap him in a spider’s web. Just then, Scott was transported by Zayn Asghar to the year 2549, where he came face to face with an Asgardian upgraded Ultron attacking a much younger version of Hank Pym.

Luckily, Scott brought with him the Aging Ray which was restored by Zayn’s construction nanites. They used the ray to reverse the aging that allowed Ultron to become an Asgaridan Ultron and sent him back into the timestream, where he was lost yet again.

Scott became trapped in the Quantum Realm after the Pyms fell victim to Thanos‘ snap and no one knew how to bring him back. By accident, Scott was able to exit the realm after what felt like minutes to him. It was five years for everyone else.

Realizing the time travel capabilities of this, Scott reaches out to the surviving Avengers and pitches a “time heist” to them. They would show up to moments from their past where they knew the Infinity Stones were, so that they could steal them and undo what Thanos accomplished. Combining the Pym tech in Scott’s possession with the big brains of Tony Stark, Rocket Raccoon, and the Hulk, the Avengers cautiously took on the responsibility.

Lang accompanies Captain America and Tony Stark to Chitauri invasion from The Avengers. They fail to secure the space stone, but they do retrieve the mind stone. Cap entrusts the stone to Scott while he makes a second trip with Tony to find the space stone.

Later, when a different version of Thanos time travels to the present and destroys the Avengers compound, Ant-Man rescues Hulk, Rocket, and War Machine from under the rubble and joins the rest of the heroes in a battle against Thanos’ multiple armies.
