Creation
Briar Rose was created by writer John Ney Rieber and artist Ryan Kelly in The Books of Faerie: Molly’s Story issue 2, in 1999.
Major Story Arcs
Briar Rose was originally a Flitling. At one point, long ago, she had an affair with Auberon by putting herself into a human-sized body. She also tried to create a rebellion among the Flitlings against the other fairies. It was stopped, and Titania âshowed her mercyâ by imprisoning her spirit in a body like the one in which she seduced Auberon.
She makes a plan to take over Faerie. It is not explained how, but she somehow uses the powerful gem Twilight to bring the demon Barbatos to Faerie, to cause chaos. A frog then somehow gains Twilight and becomes the powerful creature known as Ibbit, who Barbatos helps to enslave the fairies.
Briar convinces Molly and Yarrow, who are hoping to rescues Auberon and Titania, and get the powerful gem Twilight in order to relieve Mollyâs curse, to let her guide them to Auberon and Titania. Molly and Yarrow donât realize who she is.
She leads them to Bongsquall, who uses his powers to enslave Yarrow into saying Yes to anything he asks.
Briar and Molly escape. Briar instructs Molly to help collect water from a variety of enchanted pools. Molly falls in one, and shrinks. She is almost eaten by her cat, Filthy, but finds another way to feed him. Briar watches and laughs. She says she would have helped if necessary, but Molly doesnât believe her. When Filthy falls into a pool too, he grows wings, and then Molly does too. They hide, and when Briar comes out later, she canât find them. She remarks that she hopes she died, and in pain.
Titania is caught by Barbatos and Ibbit. Briar finds her there, and shoots her with her miniature arrows. She learns the location of Ibbit, Barbatos, and Auberon from Titania.
Then she visits Barbatos, and promises him the power to get back to Hell, plus the soul of Molly, if he gives her Faerie and Auberon. He agrees.
Molly and Yarrow rescue Auberon, who thinks Briar is a worse danger than Ibbit or Barbatos. Her goal is to become Queen, then to allow the Flitlings to take over and enslave the rest of Faerie. She plans to possess Mollyâs body, using it as Queen, sending Mollyâs spirit to Barbatos.
Briar opens a can of cat food and entices Filthy to come to her. Then Barbatos takes him hostage.
Briar finds the others around Ibbit, trying to regain Twilight. She shoots Auberon, then fights Titania with magic. Titania proves the stronger, and destroys Briarâs body. However, her spirit may have survived.
Powers and Abilities
Briar carries a pair of miniature bows and arrows, only inches tall, that she claims are very deadly. Two of the small arrows are enough to make Titania or Auberon fall, and lay helpless and unable to move. She is clearly a good shot, capable of hitting Titania from a distance, or sniping small flying Flitlings.
Even when she was a Flitling, she was able to possess othersâ bodies.
She is capable of shooting out magical energy blasts, but she was no match for Titania.
